The Codington County Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of Codington County, South Dakota. The Society was incorporated in 1974, and operates the Codington Heritage Museum in uptown Watertown, SD. The Codington County Historical Society is a vital part of the community, collecting and maintaining the material culture of Codington County for the benefit of future generations. The Historical Society is mainly supported by a bequest from the "Cliff, Kathryn and Nora Sanders Charitable Gift Fund," support from Society members and the City of Watertown.

The Codington County Heritage Museum is in the former Carnegie Library, a 1906 example of Classical Revival architecture. The ornate oak woodwork is a highlight of the building's interior. The museum displays both permanent and temporary exhibits, devoted to telling the story of Codington County and its people. The museum staff provides group tours, research assistance programs. The museum's collections include thousands of local history artifacts, archives which include significant material of interest to researchers in local history, and more than 3,000 photographs. The Codington County Heritage Museum also hosts various programs and traveling exhibits throughout the year.
