Codeinone is 1/3 as active as codeine as an analgesic but it is an important intermediate in the production of hydrocodone a pain killer about 3/4 the potency of morphine. It is almost exclusivly used mixed with a non-opiate analgesic, generally acetaminophen. This is supposed to prevent people taking larger than recommended doses since they would be overdosing on the acetaminophen. Sadly, many people do take multiple tablets resulting in either immediate overdose from the opiate component or hepatic failure due to the acetaminophen. To overcome this problem, some abusers have used sodium Iodide or sodium bisulfite which form insoluable complexes with the ketone group in hydrocodone. Thus, the acetaminophen can be removed.

Codeinone can described as the methylether of morphinone: 3-methyl-morphinone.
Codeinone can be also described as the ketone of codeine: codein-6-on.
