[edit] Narcissism Article
CloudSurfer, hope you are well. Some anonymous removed this text that you added to Narcissism:
- Vaknin, Sam - Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited - Skopje and Prague, Narcissus Publications, 2003 - Much of this article is taken from this book with the permission of the author.
I added my book in the bibliography at this stage. Any way you can help restore the original text above and explain to all would-be "editors" why you added it?

[edit] Schizophrenia Article
Hi CloudSurfer,
Just a note to say hi, thanks for your constructive comments on the Schizophrenia article and you may be interested in checking out the Psychopathology project. - Vaughan 10:44, 9 Sep 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Depression Comments
Hi there, CloudSurfer. With regard to your remarks at Talk:Clinical depression, that was an old argument with a user that at present is banned for his unreasonable behaviour, one aspect of which was labeling everything that moved as "alternative medicine". His identity is a little disguised on that page because he signs as "John Gohde" instead of User:Mr-Natural-Health. - Nunh-huh 06:53, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Advice
Hello, CloudSurfer. Regarding your edits on clinical depression: I don't know if I'm the best person to ask about you and Denni. I think the best thing you can is leave a short friendly message on Denni's talk page. Thanks. :) Neutrality (talk) 21:32, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Good work
You're doing good work and it's great to have you here. How about getting rid of that empty user page? ;) -- sannse (talk) 18:57, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Don't feel you have to give out any private information you don't want to. I choose not to use my real name for example, and many here do the same. In fact it was only after some time here that I even added a link to my hometown to my user page. Just add anything you feel comfortable with :) -- sannse (talk) 22:00, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Suicide
Indeed, somesort of catastrophic problem occurred after my edit. Thanks for salvaging it. I think that the philosophical and religiour sections could easily be moved to Religious and philosophical views of suicide or a similar page, but I am worried about duplicating the problem. Hopefully, that can be done sometime in my absence.
Peregrine981 05:58, Sep 18, 2004 (UTC)
I have been using a somewhat antiquated browser the past week as I have been visiting my grandparents, so that may explain the cut! Thanks for the help, hope the suicide page comes along as time passes.

[edit] Number of edits
Hello. The comment I made (I can't remember where it was, so I can't verify this) was to a user who had been making a lot of minor edits (way more than 5) to an article in a short space of time. It's perfectly acceptable to make quick successive edits to articles, it only becomes a problem when you make a huge number of them in a ridiculously short amount of time. As for the lawyer business, I unfortunately don't know of any specific central place that the lawyer Wikipedians congregate on the site. Your best bet for such a question is on the Village Pump - almost all questions get answered there satisfactorily. If it helps, I'll have a look at the mental health articles. I just finished studying mental health in the criminal law of Western Australia. - Mark 02:10, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Purge Button
The purge button script is meant to be put in your user script file, a sub-page of your user page called monobook.js . That script is then included every time you view a page on Wikipedia (when you're logged in of course). Just copy the script from User:Rparle/scripts/purgebutton to User:CloudSurfer/monobook.js and it should work straight away. I haven't tested it in Internet Explorer myself, but I'm told it works. —Rory ☺ 10:44, Sep 25, 2004 (UTC)
- It may be that the version of Internet Explorer you're using doesn't support some of the javascript I used. I'm sorry it doesn't work for you. I suspect that you won't need to purge too many caches, so the manual method shouldn't be too taxing. —Rory ☺ 11:12, Sep 25, 2004 (UTC)
You might try replacing the line
window.addEventListener( "load" , addPurgeButton , false );
with
window.onload = addPurgeButton;
I suspect that's the part that IE struggles with. —Rory ☺ 11:28, Sep 25, 2004 (UTC)
- It should appear on every page where the URL starts with "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/". It shouldn't appear on pages starting "http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=". Is this the behaviour you see? Note that this means it will not re-appear on a page immediately after purging because the URL will be in that second form. —Rory ☺ 11:47, Sep 25, 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for your help getting this to work. —Rory ☺ 11:58, Sep 25, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Thank you
Hi CloudSurfer, thank you for your corrections of my edit in the Personality disorder article. I completely missed the 'psychological' label in the preview. You've picked a cool username, by the way. best regards, Sietse 09:10, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Narcissism vs. Narcissistic PD
I agree that the current Narcissism article should be split into a PD and a non-PD part. I'll split it and add what I know about it to the PD article. I'm not really familiar with psychoanalytic theory though, so maybe someone else could write a bit about that part of the subject. Sietse 17:26, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] DSM cautionary statement
Good idea! I feel it is also important to discuss cultural influences on the criteria and their use in diagnosis, so I have added a bit about that subject to your statement. Sietse 12:24, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Okay, I'll also add see-also notes about the statement when I have the time or when I'm editing the relevant articles anyway.

[edit] Disorder categories
Hi CloudSurfer. I'm confused by the naming of the Category:Disorder - many non-mental diseases are equally disorders, yet have not been classified as such. May I suggest moving its contests to Psychiatric disorders or another specification, to avoid confusion? JFW | T@lk 22:10, 9 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks for your elaborate reply. Perhaps the status quo is not too bad, if the mental health Wiki-community agrees that "disorder" is an appropriate name for entities in mental health diagnostics (the name of DSM suggests that it is). Frankly, of course, bipolar disorder is equally a disease, while asthma could be termed a disorder (of physiology?) but I agree that, perhaps, we ought to let sleeping dogs lie. JFW | T@lk 09:07, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for your explanation of the disorder category scheme on my user page. Your plan to make a hierarchy which corresponds to the DSM classification sounds good to me. I'll add the articles in 'disorder' to the 'abnormal psychology' category, like you suggested. The reason for changing the category membership of compulsive hoarding was that I am not aware of any link between compulsive hoarding and anxiety disorders (except for the correlation with OCD symptoms). In my opinion it would make more sense to assign it to a general mental health category (like psychopathology, mental disorders, abnormal psychology). I am curious about your reason for including it in the 'anxiety disorder' category. Sietse 13:32, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Okay, I see what you mean. I agree that if it is to be grouped with a class of disorders, the anxiety disorder category fits best. While I was thinking about it, I had an idea about which I'd like to hear your opinion. We now have a classification that is based on disorders: you can look up a disorder and read about its symptoms. That's good. But I think it would also be useful if there was some kind of "reverse lookup table": an article with a list of symptoms along with the disorders that each symptom is associated with (along with a cautionary note at the top of the page not to jump to conclusions). Something like:
- What do you think about it? Any idea about a short title for such an article? ;) Sietse 18:16, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Source images
Hi. I answered your question at the village pump... AFAIK there is no idea yet of keeping source images in the wikimedia servers, I think for space reasons. Pfortuny 07:48, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Yes, you are right (I took me quite a while to add the black ribbon, by the way). However, as the usual policiy is "please include only free formats" I guess you will have to transform your
vector images to .eps or .svg. However, I think they are not the very best formats for editing (I used corel for some time and it really had problems with .eps files and I guess .svg is not yet ready as a complete vector editing language).
- Dunno if this helps or not, but that is the present state of affairs afaik.
- Hope you like your stay at the wikipedia. Pfortuny 08:03, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Nice work
Just a note to say thanks for the great work on the psychopathology and psychiatry entries. Particularly the new entries which were much needed and now look great. - Vaughan 19:50, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Hi Cloudsurfer,
Thanks for your reply. Actually, I'm a psychologist, but the majority of my work at the moment is on the cognitive neuropsychiatry of psychosis and delusions, but I have a wider interest in mental health issues and psychiatric practice. Either way, I agree that it's important to get the basics in place and hopefully our perspectives will make a nice counterpoint and complement each other. - Vaughan 08:33, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Hello again,
There isn't an article on Overvalued idea and I've been putting it off for ages, largely due to the fact that the definition is so ambiguous. None-the-less, I have a fair amount of literature on these issues, so I must get round to synthesising it all.
Mental illness and psychiatry are often contentious and this often comes out on wikipedia, not always for the worst, although it sometimes takes a while to get to an acceptable version. The schizophrenia article now seems relatively stable and (I hope) manages to incorporate most points of view and theoretical issues. However, it was fairly turbulent for a time, but I found it helped to forwarn and note major changes on the talk page, reference and take deep breaths! - Vaughan 11:58, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Regarding your commentary on Talk:Holocaust denial examined: Your points are noted and heartily agreed with. Once that page is unprotected (which should hopefully be within the next several hours, when the current dispute is taken care of), this will be taken care of. Please be aware that the page was not protected because of flagrant POV violations throughout the course of the entire text, but rather because of HistoryBuffEr's antagonism and repeated actions over one very minor point of the article (the fact that Holocaust deniers use the term "Zionist" to describe their opponents). Other non-NPOV portions of this article such as that topic header will be dealt with quickly once this is taken care of. --Modemac 08:43, 15 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Reply: indigo children and insanity
Hi CloudSurfer, The reason that I removed the remark about The Indigo Children from the Insanity article was that I did not understand it and it looked nonsensical to me. I do not know of any connection between insanity and IC, unless one considers children with ADD or ADHD to be insane. But if I had expected that more people would agree with the statement, I wouldn't have removed it. So I've put it back, a bit modified to make it more NPOV. I hope that's OK with you. If it's not, you're welcome to revert both of my changes.
By the way, I hope that my adding accuracy-dispute tags, modifying categories, and sometimes removing text does not come across as aggressive or as non-constructive criticism. It's certainly not meant that way, I'm just trying to improve things. Sietse 15:56, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks for your thoughtful and kind reply. I hadn't thought about it that way, but the insanity article indeed needs some alternative views about the whole idea of mental illness. Normally, I agree that it's good to include criticism and alternative views into articles, but I guess I was a bit too delete happy this time. In response to your idea about alternative views about mental illness in history: I'll add a reference to the article about Witchcraft and similar ideas like the ones discussed in the Malleus Maleficarum. I find it interesting to hear that you meet with different ideas about the nature of mental illness through your job. I'm curious. If you feel like it, maybe you could write a bit about those ideas in the article about insanity. I think that'd be an interesting addition.
- I recognize your observation about how it's kind of silly that articles about obscure topics like homosexual panic are well-written and complete, while some important topics receive little attention. That's a thing about which I've been thinking too, not only about collective attention to topics, but also about the kind of articles that I try to improve. I noticed that we have an exhaustive list of exclamations used by Captain Haddock and well-written articles about crushing by elephant as a death sentence, hand grenades, and diamonds; while articles about values like forgiveness and peace are, well, not all that they can be. I'm not sure if that's funny in a kind of tragic way, or tragic in a kind of funny way; I mean, assuming that Wikipedia's content more or less reflects our collective interests... [edit] Your Suicide article insertions
Hi CS:
The problem with your additions is that they are examples of the wordiness I removed. I'll explain: In "Reducing substance abuse and domestic violence in families are long-term strategies to reduce mental health problems in general," the offending terms are highlighted.
1. Domestic violence is by nature and by definition in families. If it weren't, it wouldn't be domestic. That one really ought to be removed for the sake of the writing. It's akin to writing "plans for the future."
2. In general is probably inappropriate here because the mental health problems addressed arise from specific causes. Besides, people don't kill themselves in general—specific people with individual mental health problems kill themselves, and not all mental health problems lead to suicide.
This one is no great sin (unlike domestic violence in families), and I understand what you're trying to say, but it's enough to say that improving mental health helps, in my view. To my ear that already qualifies as a general, and obvious, statement.
One of the keys to good writing is removing the fat, and I could easily go too far in my zeal, so thanks for having a look.--NathanHawking 20:50, 2004 Oct 18 (UTC)
- PS: If you think domestic violence is not yet widely enough understood as a term (it probably is in the US), go with violence in families, but not both.--NathanHawking 21:02, 2004 Oct 18 (UTC)
[edit] Winter depression
I hope you don't mind, but I have merged your article on winter depression with seasonal affective disorder on the basis that this is the current name of the disorder. --CloudSurfer 19:14, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Not at all. I should have read the article more carefully. I thought it just treated any kind of seasonal mood swings. :)--Wiglaf 19:30, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Suicide wording followup
- CloudSurfer: Reducing domestic violence and substance abuse are long-term strategies to reduce many mental health problems. How do you feel about that? --CloudSurfer 06:37, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)
-
- Looks perfect to me, CS. I made the change in the article.
-
- Thanks for giving my arguments careful consideration. Too, I gave the use of suicide and suicided as a verb form some thought, and decided to trust my ear that their use is simply too strange and jarring at present. Perhaps this is less so for non-US readers, or among some professionals, but my ear is almost always right for American readers in general. It was simply too easy to use other terms. I gather my selections met with your approval. The article still needs work, but we're getting there. --NathanHawking 07:05, 2004 Oct 19 (UTC)
[edit] Article Licensing
Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
- Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered
- Multi-Licensing Guide
- Free the Rambot Articles Project
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] Electroconvulsive therapy
Recently an Anon user started adding negative sounding POV about Electroconvulsive therapy which were repeatedly deleted by several users as being POV and for not giving full references (just a name & date). Being a new user, the Anon was unaware of various WP rules or how to see page's history or talk pages and was temporarily blocked after x6 reverts, I'm happy to assume good faith and don't bite the newcomers. However the issue which remains is that a huge number of references were given (Anon's last edit did mostly give full references) that are difficult for non-specialists to assess. DocJohnny has just spent a huge amount of time writing an analysis of the source and type of each reference that was given. I agree with DocJonny's comment that "Anon has a good point regarding one thing. The original article was poorly cited, rife with name/date citations"
Seeing that you are listed on the WikiProject page as being a Psychiatrist, could you help us assess these references and which are useful: here. David Ruben Talk 03:13, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Psychology Wiki
Hi CloudSurfer,
I noticed that you are a Psychiatrist, and thought you might be interested in this project which I am involved in, The Psychology Wiki.
I won't say too much, as I'd like you to judge it for yourself, but you should find that it is different from Wikipedia, because approximately 90% of our contributors so far are professional psychologists, academics, or students and trainees.
Its hosted by a company called Wikia, which was founded by Jimmy Wales and Angela Beesley. There are Google Ads on the site, but we dont make money from the project, they're just to pay for the bandwidth, storage and technical support that Wikia give us.
Have a look and see what you think

[edit] Current Level of Activity
After a period of high involvement in Wikipedia I became distracted some time ago and have had almost no involvement for months now. This is the first time I have logged on for months. Thanks for the messages but I am still not motivated to invest a lot of time in the project. This motivation may well return at some time. Keep up the good work.
