Comment on userpage

You asked here if you were missing something concerning your userpage, why it hadn't been nominated, etc. I think I may see the "problem." Do you like small fonts or have a large screen? See, to me (I'm on a 12" Powerbook, normal size), the page looks like three equal-width columns, with the middle one filled but the other two empty at the bottom. At first, I thought you just designed your page like that, but then I zoomed out (ie, made my fonts, etc., smaller onscreen) and saw that they were equally filled at the smallest possible font size. Your page looks excellent at that level, so you may want a disclaimer at the top of your page saying "Best viewed ... etc., etc." (I know my page looks like crap except in Safari and sometimes Firefox, so I've just included one on my pages.) Just my two cents. - ElAmericano (dímelo) 20:57, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Here's a pic of the top, the middle, and the near-bottom of your page, as viewed from Safari. (It's the same for me on Firefox, except you have nice-looking rounded corners.)

Question on rollback

Why did you rollback this edit? Rollback is supposed to be used to revert vandalism, and this looks, on its face, to be a valid comment to Jimbo. So why the reversion? Thanks. --LV (Dark Mark) 23:56, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Actually, I don't really blame you for what you did. I reviewed his or her recent contributions, and they do have a history of adding slightly nonsensical material, so you were probably right to have a slanted view of his or her good faith edits. I'm not really sure it mattered, I was just wondering if I had missed something. Thanks for the genial response though. Cheers. --LV (Dark Mark) 00:09, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

User page award

Congratulations, ClockworkSoul/Archive11! Your user page has been nominated for the Esperanza User Page Award! Five judges will look over your user page and award it 1-10 points in four categories:

  • Attractiveness: general layout, considering colour scheme and/or use of tables if applicable
  • Usefulness: links to subpages or editing aids, helpful information
  • Interesting-ness: quirky, unique, captivating, or funny content
  • General niceness: at the judges' discretion

But first, you must be chosen as a finalist. If your user page is chosen as one of the five finalists, you'll have the chance to win an award created just for having a great user page!

Nerve agents

Sure they are. VE (nerve agent) has a nitrogen trisubstituted by organic groups (two ethyl groups and the rest of the molecule), hence an amine. They are, generally speaking, esters but not carboxylate esters, e.g., DFP is the isopropyl diester of flurophosphoric acid. Choess 18:55, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

62.255.232.3/62.255.236.59

Thanks for blocking 62.255.232.3. However, it looks like s/he has acquired a new IP -- 62.255.236.59. My evidence? Take a look at the comments on User talk:62.255.232.3, then at the bottom of my talk page (section title "Hey"). The same text is posted, but on my page it was posted by 62.255.236.59, and I am in fact carrying on a bit of a conversation with that IP (which has also started vandalizing). Could you block that IP as well? Thanks. Hbackman 06:37, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Thri-Kreen edit on Dark Sun page

The Thri Kreen of Athas book does in fact say Rajaat ignored the Kreen because he thought they were animals. It does seem logical that he would not kill them because they are the other blue age race. (And no- he didn't think halflings were animals) but this is the only mention of what Rajaat thought of Kreen. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.116.198.0 (talkcontribs).

Thanks!

Barnstar development guidelines

In response to some of the comments about archiving discussions, and how awards are vetted, last week I tweaked the Guidelines. No one noticed. I also archived the discussion that was used to create them. I just wanted to give you a heads up. evrik 18:43, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Photosynthesis

Thanks for correcting my photosynthesis screw up. I noticed you are Stony Brook. Have you had much interaction with the plant biologists at CSH? David D. (Talk) 05:14, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

  • No, I haven't had the pleasure of working with them. My work is in hematology and infectious disease, and our paths don't cross all that often. Are you thinking of anybody in particular? – ClockworkSoul 05:15, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
    • Not really, I know all of them since the plant community, especially Maize, is pretty small. Since you have an interest in photosynthesis i thought you might have come across them in some lectures. I know a lot of them do teach in Stony Brook courses, although obviously none in photosynthesis. David D. (Talk) 05:24, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Please reconsider your revision of my edits

Hello,

I noticed you are a graduate student in biochemistry. I'm currently working on my graduate degree in molecular biology, and I found this Wikipedia entry while doing some research for a paper on CBRNE agents. I'm in the Air Force and actually spent time Iraq last year for five months doing some "WMD sniffing" via PCR.

Anyway, I made some more balanced edits on the page concerning media involvement that you quickly reverted. I'd love to discuss and debate these edits with you. I'm not some scrub who just tries to make sneak attacks on this site, but I would prefer a more balanced approach when discussing politically-related matters with regard to WMD and CBRNE agents and media coverage of the Iraq War (which is decidedly anti-war and therefore biased).

First, Fox News never misled its viewers into believing WMD were found in Iraq. It's obvious the purpose of this entry was to discredit Fox News as some sort of distributor of false information, and it also seems to paint FN viewers as some sort of unthinking sheep.

Also, sighting a study that states Americans are basically ignoramuses compared to Europeans when it comes to discerning the truth on Iraq is a little overtly political, don't you think?

Anyway, I'm curious to hear your thoughts, and also...how does one become a "power broker" on this site (with the power to kill or accept content modification if one doesn't like what's entered)? I can understand the desire to prevent just anyone from making modifications, but this censorship seems to be quite and antithetical to free speech and open discourse.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

Brew Box (Beer info box)

I've been speaking with User:Mike Dillon about the beer info box. Actually, I started the conversation elsewhere, but it ended up with him because he appeared to be doing some work with the box. I think it's a potentially very useful item. I see info boxes in other areas that are useful. But I am concerned that our present use of the beer box is unhelpful and unattractive. I like the location, owner, production, and date of founding information. This is hard, mostly unchanging info. The beer listing, however, is controversial, long and unhelpful. All too often I see brewery articles which consist of little more than lists of beers in a beer info box. This does seriously limit flexibility and discussion on the beers; and encourages people to simply list all the beers they can name from that particular brewery. Also, within the beer box, there is a focus on selecting a style name for a beer when beer style is mainly an American activity - different countries have different ways of approaching the identification of a beer - in Britain, for example, the beers are identified mainly by abv; while in France the beers are identified mainly by colour. Beer discussion is best done within the article where regional differences can be more readily accommodated and explored. I have been experimenting with different usage of the beer info box to see what elements work best. My current thinking is that it is very useful as an address and hard info box (owner, annual production, outlets, contact details, etc) placed centrally at the bottom of the page, and should perhaps be designed to be wider. And it might also be good to include links to other breweries in the immediate area. Anyway - what are your thoughts? I'd like to bring this up on the beer notice board, but thought it best to get a general feel for things first so that a more polished and clear proposal could be formulated to avoid a long protracted debate. Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

AN/I

Notwithstanding our general desire to curb vandalism, which purpose is likely furthered by your having contacted the school about which you wrote on the AN/I, and notwithstanding that the students were likely supposed to be otherwise occupied at the time, upon the making of which conclusion we might say that they have violated some school rule, about which it might be (but likely isn't) appropriate to inform the principal, I think your action to be a bit overwrought, viz., because your intent seems not to have been with respect to the encyclopedia but, rather, with respect to students' placing personal information on the Internet in general. Though you are surely within your rights independently to contact the school (even as I think it is wholly inappropriate that a school official should be inculcating information about protecting one's privacy on the Internet, especially to high schoolers; I, even had I been frivolous with personal information, would have understood such upbraiding to be altogether pedantic, paternalistic, and patronizing), I hope that you didn't contact them in the context of your being a Wikipedia admin; at the very least, since this wasn't an administrative action (because, once more, your intention, as I understand it--please correct me if I'm wrong--was not toward the cessation of vandalism but rather toward the protection of two teenagers), I don't think it should have been discussed in such context on the AN/I. I hope you won't infer any animosity from my comment, as surely I've had nothing but positive--if tangential--contact with you in the past and have no reason at all to doubt your good faith and judgment in this respect; I simply don't know that, to the extent that your action was in an interpersonal (cf., administrative) capacity, it was altogether correct, though I certainly understand the arguments to the contrary. Bio-Barnstar

Hi ClockworkSoul, I saw a discussion about a bio-barnstar on the barnstar proposal page. Like Francisco, I would also like to see the addition of a barnstar specific for the life sciences. Here's my suggestion:

Image:Bio_barnstar.png

You wrote there "you do have the option of proposing a wikiproject barnstar for one of the biology-related wikiprojects". I am not sure where I would propose the above award. Could you let me know?

I agree that one cannot have a barnstar for every category, only for the big ones. But aren't the life sciences a sufficiently big category? I like the E=mc2 icon but it would rather choose the normal barnstar when honouring the work on a biology article, since the E=mc2 icon looks like nuclear physics and is in fact more often awarded for work on physical or mathematical items because of its look.

Hope to hear from you. Jasu 15:29, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

My username

Hey there, ClockworkSoul! I know I haven't talked to you in a while, but I was wondering if you could help me with something. For some time now, I've been displeased with my username, and wanted to change it up to something different. I'd gone over to Essjay's page, and the ever-so-kind Talrias chipped in that I might want to talk with you, regarding your name change. I've seen several cases like yours; Lifeisunfair --> David Levy, and a couple others that I can't remember right now. Despite my seive of a mind, I'd still like to ask for your assitance in helping me chose a new name. Talrias suggested that I have a "name the admin" contest, but I'm not sure how many people would turn up, as I haven't exactly been active for the last few months. In any event, if you'd get back to me on this subject, it'd be greatly appreciated, and I'll thank you evermore. -Mysekurity[m!] 22:09, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

A "name the admin" contest would be great for you. :) Unfortunately, you won't be able to carry your edits over, but that's really no big deal. First, take a look at my old Name the Admin Candidate page, which might give you some leads. The next hurdle is publicity, of course. While I had the benefit of an RfA, you have the advantage of a much larger user base than I. I recommend that you do the following:
  1. Place a notice and cheerful request for some publicity on the Esperanza talk page. They;re always looking for a projects like this one to help the community morale.
  2. Choose at least ten people you know might be interested, and leave them a note regarding the contest on the user page. Make sure that one of those people is User:Can't sleep, clown will eat me, because for some odd reason everybody has his page on their watchlist.
  3. Finally, a quick note on the Administrators' noticeboard would not be inappropriate, and may be helpful as well.
I'll be happy to help in any way you need, so feel free to drop me a line! Good luck! – ClockworkSoul 22:35, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

User Page

I had a question about the userpages. I used a table in mine (check it out!), but if you look really closely, you can see that the borders are white. I finally changed the bg color to match that of the page (it took me three weeks to find the color!). I was wondering how to change the border color.

Note: I use a template for my user page---you must scroll down to the bottom of the page, and select edit user page, that way, you edit the template to which the user page refers.

Primate#101 05:10, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

P.S. How many years did it take you to make your userpage?

Thanks for the tag---it worked. The user page I currently have is temporary---I'm creating a new one after seeing yours! Anyway, it won't be visable for a while, because I have trouble with pipe syntax. Again, thanks for the tip.

Precursors on chemical warfare templates

Hi, Rmhermen! These templates were designed to contain a list of chemical warfare agents, but I see that you added a handful of precursors used in binary munitions. I'm not certain that this is the best approach, because binary agents differ from unary agents only in the manner and timing of the final step of their synthesis. I'm rolling back the changes for now, but if you feel strongly about them I'm more than happy to talk about them. Cheers! – ClockworkSoul 04:15, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes I do feel that they should be there - and so should Novichok agent. The sidebar says "This article forms part of the series Chemical warfare", not "this is a list of unary agents. Hi ClockworkSoul, I really like your page design but since I'm relatively new to the wikipedia & it's syntax I got lost in your code. Are there help pages that explain a little about tables, formating, etc. In particular, I don't understand the use of special characters like | and |- and {| |}. All the best. • I think I managed more or less to understand your cool & fancy table system. Very nice work. Ciao, Jasu 17:05, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
Stressbusters
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor

In reference to Bio-barnstar proposal: What is the next move?

There was much talk lately about the bio-barnstar proposal, but these past 5 days there hasn't been more said. What is next? What is there to be done? Can we move this foward...? It is the first time I involve myself in a barnstar proposal and I do not know what is the procedure. I seem to read there is quite a support for a bio-barnstar and a considerable preference for the second proposal... Please, could someone tell me what next? Thanks.--Francisco Valverde 17:35, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
