Clotaire III
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Clotaire III (652-673) was the eldest son of Clovis II, king of Neustria and Burgundy. He succeeded his father in his kingdoms in 655 or 658, upon his death. He was under the regency of his mother, Queen Balthild until 664 or 665. Throughout his reign, he was dominated by his mayor of the palace, Ebroin.
Sometime between 657 and 661, he became the ruler of all the Franks through the removal of the usurping Childebert the Adopted, but the Austrasians begged for a king of their own and sometime between 660 and 662, Ebroin gave Austrasia to another son of Clovis II, Childeric II. Clotaire retained Neustria and Burgundy until his death in Spring 673. He was buried in Saint Denis Basilica and a tomb, probably his, was discovered there recently. Then, his brother Theuderic III succeeded him.
It is notable that he is often described as the first roi fainéant—do-nothing king—of the Merovingian dynasty.
