Clive Wigram, 1st Baron Wigram

Clive Wigram, 1st Baron Wigram, GCB GCVO CSI was Private Secretary to the Sovereign 1931–1936.
He was born in 1873, and educated at Winchester College (of which he later became a Fellow), and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He served in the Royal Artillery 1893-1897, and the Indian Army from 1897.
In 1897 he joined the 18th (King George's Own) Bengal Lancers, and served on the Tirah Expedition in the North West Frontier 1897-1898. From 1899-1904 he was Aide-de-Camp to the Viceroy of India, an office he had already filled in 1895. In 1900 he served with Kitchener's Horse in the Second Boer War, and was Mentioned in Despatches.
In 1905-1906 he served as Assistant Chief of Staff to the Prince of Wales in India, and in the following year he was promoted major and was appointed Equerry to the Prince of Wales, an office he held until the Prince became King, in 1910. Wigram then became Assistant Private Secretary and Equerry to the King (1910-1931). In 1915 he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel, and later to Brevet Colonel. In 1919 he was promoted to Colonel.
In 1931 he was promoted to Private Secretary to the Sovereign and held office until he retired in 1936. He served as Keeper of the Archives 1931-1945. He became Extra Equerry in 1931, and held this appointment until his death. From 1936 he was a Lord in Waiting.
From 1935-1935 he was Keeper of the Privy Purse, and 1936-1945 was Deputy Constable of Windsor Castle.
He was Colonel of the 19th Lancers 1932-1945.
He was created CB 1918, and promoted to KCB in 1931, and GCB in 1933. He also received the LVO in 1903, and was advanced to the CVO in 1915, KCVO 1928 and GCVO in 1932. He also received the CSI in 1911, and was sworn of the Privy Council in 1932. He was created Baron Wigram in 1935, and received the Royal Victorian Chain in 1937. He died in 1960.
Wigram was also a FRGS, FRHS, and FZS. He was also President of Westminster Hospital, and Governor of Wellington College and Haileybury.
