Clinohedrite

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clinohedrite is a non-descript, colourless amethystine. Its chemical composition is a hydrous calclium-zinc silicate; CaZn[OH][HSiO4]. The chemical structure is extremely similar to hardystonite and is frequently mixed with the latter. It occurs very rarely as independent crystals, usually found as fractal coatings or mixed with other simlilar compounds. Under SW ultraviolet light it fluoresces a rich orange color. It is frequently associated with minerals such as hardystonite (fluoresces purple), esperite (fluoresces bright yellow), calcite (fluoresces orange-red), franklinite (non-fluorescent) and williemite (fluoresces green, and is frequently phosphorescent). Clinohedrite is found primarily at the Franklin and Sterling Hill mines in Franklin, NJ.
