Clementon is a Borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 4,986.

The Borough of Clementon was created on February 13, 1925, from Clementon Township, one of seven municipalities created from the now-defunct township.

Clementon is located at 39°48′21″N, 74°59′3″W (39.805847, -74.984218)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 5.1 km² (2.0 mi²). 4.9 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (3.08%) is water.

Clementon borders Lindenwold, Pine Hill, and Pine Valley.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there are 4,986 people, 1,978 households, and 1,246 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,018.6/km² (2,636.3/mi²). There are 2,206 housing units at an average density of 450.7/km² (1,166.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 82.23% White, 11.57% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.92% Asian, 0.18% Pacific Islander, 2.35% from other races, and 2.53% from two or more races. 4.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,978 households out of which 30.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.8% are married couples living together, 15.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.0% are non-families. 29.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the borough the population is spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.5 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $42,207, and the median income for a family is $50,963. Males have a median income of $33,879 versus $29,777 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $18,510. 11.4% of the population and 9.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.6% of those under the age of 18 and 14.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Clementon operates under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government. This form of government provides for a mayor and a six-member council, elected separately in partisan elections at the November general election. The mayor serves for four years, while council members serve three-year staggered terms of office, with two council seats being contested each year. Council members are elected at large from the entire community. The mayor presides at council meetings. A council president is selected annually from among their own members by the council and presides in the absence of the mayor. The council has all executive responsibilities not specifically assigned to the mayor.[1]

The Mayor of the Borough of Clementon is Mark E. Armbruster.[2]. Members of the Clementon Borough Council are Council President Sheila Freiling, Carol Andrews, Eva Busch, William Dougherty, Ian Gill and Carol Weil.[3]

[edit] Federal, state and county representation

Clemonton is in the First Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 4th Legislative District.[4]

New Jersey's First Congressional District, covering portions of Burlington County, Camden County and Gloucester County, is represented by Rob Andrews (D, Haddon Heights). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Robert Menendez (D, Hoboken).

The 4th legislative district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Fred H. Madden (D, Turnersville) and in the Assembly by David R. Mayer (D, Blackwood) and Paul Moriarty (D, Washington Township, Gloucester County). The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken).

Camden County is governed by a seven-member Board of Chosen Freeholders. Camden County's Freeholders are: Louis Cappelli, Jr. (Freeholder Director), Edward McDonnell (Freeholder Deputy Director), Riletta L. Cream, Thomas J. Gurick, Jeffrey L. Nash, Joseph Ripa and Carmen Rodriguez.

The Clementon School District serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade at Clementon Elementary School.

Students attend Overbrook High School in Pine Hill for grades 9-12 as part of a sending/receiving relationship with the Pine Hill Schools. The high school also serves the community of Berlin Township as part of a sending/receiving relationship.
