[edit] The Village and its surroundings

There are relatively few street lights in Clehonger and the surrounding vicinity. This leads to low light pollution and the skyline remaining relatively dark at nighttime. Consequently stars are more visible than in other English settlements. Noise pollution is also relatively low.

[edit] Infrastructure and Services

The village has one pub, a small shop with post office and a school for 5 - 11 year olds, which has approx 130 - 150 pupils per year. The school's catchment area includes Belmont (2 miles away, a suburb of Hereford).

The village hall is quite modern and has a pre-school group based there on some or most mornings on weekdays.

The village previously had a petrol station. However this was closed down around [2002], demolished, and the land used for housing. Bins are on Mondays for most of the village, the postman gets out usually by 11am but its more like 1pm in the lead up to Christmas.

Broadband services became available in the village from June 2005.

A Natural Gas main was laid to south Herefordshire in the early 90's (1993 I believe) and since then, most housing seems to have changed over to it over the last 10 - 12 years.

The one disappointment is the small number of teenagers (boys mainly) who do daft things, like flicking stones at windows and messing about on the playing field. But hey, at least we don't have huge gangs swarming the streets making it dangerous to go out at night. Or at least not yet. Quite a few of the village folk walk their dogs under darkness, no problem. the teenagers are immature and generally what the public would call chavs. They hang around near the bus stop at night. They usually are not all bad behavioured as such, however, I did witness two 'goths' get punched up by the local park. But these youths who caused this incident are not local and are rarely seen.

[edit] Transport

Clehonger is served by buses primarily by two bus services: - the 39 (Brecon - Hereford service) and 449 (Madley - Hereford service). The last available bus at night from Hereford is at about 10pm, except on Fridays and Saturdays when it's 11:30pm.

A one-way ticket costs around £2.00 for the bus service, but by taxi the cost is nearer £15 - £18.

The major road link is the B4349, which passes to the side of the village.

[edit] Rivalry

Clehonger has been embroiled in a long standing rivalry with nearby village, Madley. Recently, youths from Clehonger shot at the bus driver of the 449 Hereford-Madley bus, breaking both the windscreen and back window of the vehicle, resulting in the discontinuation of the 18:49 bus. Also, the village of Madley was the centre of attention again in 2005 where houses were vandalised, cars stolen and locals attacked. Although no-one was caught by the police, individuals from Clehonger have since admitted responsibility for the course of events.

[edit] Pubs

The Seven Stars is the only pub located actually within Clehonger.

Also in the local vicinity is the Three Horse Shoes, located 3 miles to the south in Allensmore. The Three Horse Shoes serves food and a selection of beers. It is located very near the junction of the A465 and B4348 and is an easy 15-minute bicycle ride away from Clehonger. In a similar direction, you can enjoy refreshment in the Bull Ring at Kingstone, or at the Comet and the Red Lion in rival village, Madley.

[edit] Housing

Apart from the occasional farm cottage or farm house, the vast majority of housing in the village is predominantly a mix of post World War II council housing, mid-1960's buildings and 1970's/80's buildings. The post WW2 housing is mainly nearer the north side of the village, whilst the 1970's/80's housing was built to the south and west sides. The mid-1960's housing occupies the middle of the village. In the 70/80s, bungalows and dormas seemed to have proliferated while the 60's housing is the more traditional 3 or 4 bed semi-detached type.
