[edit] Developments
According to the UK Polling Report website, Cleethorpes will be Conservative target number 56 at the next General Election.
The Conservative Party selected it's parliamentary candidate in an 'open primray' on Wednesday 8th November. Applications were open to any member of the Conservative Party's priority list of approved candidates and to members of the standard list of approved candidates who claimed a local connection.
The two candidates in the final were Martin Vickers and Andrew Percy. Percy was replaced a week before the final by Alan Lockwood when Percy was selected for neighbouring Brigg & Goole. Martin Vickers won the selection in front of 100-130 people at Cleethorpes Constitutional Club. This was despite there being virtually no local press coverage from the monopoly Grimsby Telegraph newspaper and little active campaigning by the candidates ahead of the primary.
Vickers is a councillor in Grimsby and fought the seat at the last General Elections. He works as constituency agent to Edward Leigh MP and was not on the priority list. Vickers was actually the second candidate selected for the constituency after Rachel Lake was deselected in late November 2004.
