[edit] Clean Up Australia Day
Clean Up Australia Day is Australia's largest community-based environmental event. Six million Australians have participated in Clean Up Australia Day since 1989 and 165,000 tonnes of rubbish have been removed from the environment. Clean Up Australia Day is held on a weekend in March.
The first Clean Up was held in 1989, Clean Up Sydney Harbour Day with more than 40,000 Sydney residents donating their time and energy to clean up the harbour. The event went national in 1990, 300 000 Australians participated, that number has steadily increased ever since.
On Clean Up Australia Day, groups of volunteers remove rubbish from sites nominated by the community, these may include road-sides, parks and waterways.
[edit] Clean Up the World Day
Ian Kiernan approached United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and with their support launched Clean Up the World in 1993. Clean Up the World is an international campaign that encourages communities around the world to clean up, fix up and conserve their environment through the Clean Up the World Membership program. Clean Up the World weekend is held on the 3rd weekend in September each year. In its first year, Clean Up the World involved approx. 30 million people in 80 countries.
