Talk:Clarion University of Pennsylvania
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Added groups that were deleted by previous post, these are seperate groups (Techfloor is not affiliated with the CIS Department). According to Clarion University they are affiliated with Reinhard Villages, I’m sorry but the University cannot affiliate themselves with Reinhard Villages and then deny any involvement. Some of the removed external likes were re-added because they are relevant to the University. FIRE is a nationally known and respected organization then their speech code ratings do carry weight and they should be publicly known. Currently the POKER committee is looking into improving the speech code rating. BinaryCleric 22:08, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Preventing an Edit War
In order to prevent what could possibly end up as a battle over what goes into this article, I am going to go over what changes I made to this page recently and then partially revert things back to the way the were before.
[edit] Groups and External Links
I removed the following items because they are as it appears to be some bias, if you will about which groups are "notable" to the University community and because I noticed that there was a definite slant towards student organizations that were related to students that more than likely in the CIS department. Before the edit there were four computing related groups (ACM, AITS, CU Backslash, and techfloor), four other groups (the band, UAB, interhall and senate) and three groups relating to the "news media/press" (student paper, TV and radio).
I made the decision to remove some of the "CIS-related" groups in order to make the listing more neutral, and due to the low number of members in those groups (i.e. the TechFloor has 8 members as is shown here). You might want to see WP:NPOV (specifically the section on 'bias' as well as 'undue weight': "if a viewpoint is held by an extremely small (or vastly limited) minority, it doesn't belong in Wikipedia…")
I also removed some of the external links for the similar reasons.
However, one must also remember that Wikipedea isn't a soapbox. For this reason I removed CU Backslash and the links to FIRE. Including groups that you are an actively involved in and support, and making them seem to be of more importance than they ought to be isn't what Wikipedia is about. I'm sure that you are proud of your work and the things that you do, but I think that there should be some thought as to what is in here. Also, because you think that all universities ought to have something doesn't mean that you ought to list it for one school and not others.
[edit] Reinhard Villages
Previously the article said that, "Clarion University also maintains Reinhard Villages which is an off-campus apartment complex."
I removed this because the university does not maintain these property but is merely affiliated with it. This is no more different than the university being affiliated with Pepsi-Cola because they sell Pepsi products (and in turn one wouldn't say that Clarion maintains Pepsi bottling plants).
Just a technicality.
Thanks. jpmck 20:01, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re:Preventing an Edit War
As long as this page doesn't turn into a way for Clarion to get good PR and sticks specifically to facts (like a good encyclopedia should) then I am alright with the edits. I just hate how people use Wikipedia to get a good public image (politicians, colleges, etc). The pages as it is now looks pretty good and hopefully it stays that way.
