Claymont is a census-designated place (CDP) in New Castle County, Delaware, United States. The population was 9,220 at the 2000 census.

Claymont is located at 39°47′58″N, 75°27′53″W (39.799512, -75.464699)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²), all land.

NOTE: The CDP for Claymont excludes key parts of zip 19703, including Ashbourne Hills, the Greentree section, the Society Hill Section, and parts of Rolling Park.Zip 19703 has traditionally been known to be the boundaries of Claymont. (Its boundaries are the Del. River = East, PA State Line = North, CRX RR = West, and Perkins Run on the Pike at Pat's Pizzeria = South.)

Claymont is a census-designated place (CDP) in New Castle County, Delaware, Delaware, United States. Claymont comprises approximately half of the 19703 ZIP code. For additional demographic information on the entire ZIP code designated area, please see [External Links] below. As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 9,220 people, 3,792 households, and 2,400 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,687.1/km² (4,371.4/mi²). There were 4,193 housing units at an average density of 767.3/km² (1,988.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 71.04% White, 23.33% African American, 0.33% Native American, 1.44% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.63% from other races, and 2.21% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.18% of the population.

There were 3,792 households out of which 32.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.6% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 34.0% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.9 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $40,813, and the median income for a family was $46,780. Males had a median income of $36,493 versus $28,399 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,211. About 6.6% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.4% of those under age 18 and 3.0% of those age 65 or over.
