Clayton Allen Hensley is a Major League starting pitcher for the San Diego Padres. He was born on August 31, 1979 in Tomball, Texas. He attended Lamar University in Beaumont, TX, where he set a single season record by striking out 127 in 100.0 innings. Summoned from Triple-A Portland at midseason to fill a hole on the staff, Hensley was a revelation with his poise and command. He emerged as a vital figure in middle relief and made one spot start against the Dodgers on September 10, making enough of an impression to stamp himself as a candidate for a starting role in 2006. He can throw any of his four pitches in any count, with a sinking fastball that is his out pitch. He did not allow a home run in 47.2 innings.
Hensley was thrust into the starting rotation after the early season ineffectiveness of Dewan Brazelton (previously with Tampa Bay) and the demotion of 2005 starter Tim Stauffer. In 2006, Hensley has established himself as a legitimate #3 or #4 starter. In the clubhouse, Hensley is known for his antics, most notably shoving a shaving cream pie in the face of teammate and fellow rookie Josh Barfield during a live television interview following an early September Barfield walk-off three run home run.
He made his Major League debut on July 20, 2005.
