Clavering is a village in north-west Essex in England. The village's name means "place where clover grows". Clavering is situated 20 miles (32km) south of Cambridge on the River Stort. It is one of over 100 villages in the district of Uttlesford. Located just 10 miles from London Stansted Airport, the village may be affected by plans to expand the airport.
Notable sites in Clavering include Clavering Castle and the former Clavering guildhall. The remains of the castle are now just ringworks and earthworks. The castle is believed to date to pre-Norman times. The former guildhall is a medieval Grade II* listed building. The building, which was constructed in the early 16th century was restored following a fire in December 1991.
The noted Chef and television personality Jamie Oliver comes from Clavering. His father Trevor runs one of the two village pubs, The Cricketers, which has now become quite a large attraction for people from different parts of the country and locals alike.
The other village pub is called The Fox and Hounds, and is situated on the other side of the village next to the stream. Both this pub and The Cricketers attract people from other villages such as Arkesden and Wicken Bonhunt along with the residents of Clavering.
The village has a park, which leads onto many beautiful countryside walks, through woods, fields and many other rural settings.
As well as the above mentioned water courses Clavering also has several accessible fishing lakes, which attract keen anglers from far and wide in search of a good day's fishing.
Clavering also benefits from one of the most attractively designed, largest and best-stocked village shops in the country.
