This article discusses classical music in South Africa.
[edit] Overview
The National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) in South Africa was disbanded in 1997 after government cut back funding for the arts (JPO, 2003). Not much has changed since 1997. The Minister of Arts and Culture, Pallo Jordan, has recently stated that government is not going to support classical orchestral music in Gauteng as they have done in the past. However orchestras in Cape Town and Durban receive support from their cities, provinces and national government).
The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) is one of the leading orchestras in South Africa. [citation needed]
