Classic Bhajans

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bhajans by Kabir, Mirabai, Surdas, Tulsidas and a few others are considered to be classic. The language of their works is influenced by several of the dialects of Hindi. They are widely enjoyed even among those who do not speak Hindi.

Here is a representative selection of the best known bhajans by these poets.

[edit] Kabir: jhini re jhini re jhini chadariya

This bhajan has been recorded by several well known singers. Chadaria is chadar, a sheet of cloth. In this bhajan, the sheet stands for the human body, which is worn by a soul (atman) and is shed at the end of a life.

Translation:

This is fine, this is fine cloth.
It is been dipped in the Ram Nam (the name of the lord)
The spinning wheel, like an eight-petal lotus, spins,
with five tatvas and three gunas as the pattern.
Lord stiched it in 10 months (the gestation period)
The threads have been pressed to get a tight weave.
It has been worn by gods, people, and sages
they soiled it with use.
Kabir says, I have covered my self with this cloth with great care,
and eventually will leave it like it was.

[edit] Mirabai: mane chakar rakho ji

This famous hymn as another version which was used in the 1947 Hindi film Meerabai. However here is the more popular version, influenced by Gujarati. Mirabai is also claimed by Gujarati speakers.

Translation:

Lord Girdhari (Krishna), make me your servant.
As your servant, I will plant a garden, and see you every day.
In the groves and lanes of Vrindavan, I will sing about you.
