Clarke Carlisle (born 14 October 1979 in Preston) is a professional English football player who currently plays as a defender for Watford F.C. in the FA Premiership
Carlisle began his career as a trainee at Blackpool and eventually signed professional with the club. Carlisle's strong defensive performances during his 3 years at Blackpool attracted the attentions of Queens Park Rangers. After 8 goals in 101 appearances (in all competitions) at Blackpool, QPR paid £250,000 for his services. Whilst at QPR, Carlisle made a number of appearances for the England U21s alongside Ledley King and Frank Lampard. Carlisle spent the longest spell of his career to date at QPR, helping them gain promotion to the Championship but also encountered off the field problems there. He missed a portion of the 2003/2004 season after being admitted to a clinic for treatment for alcohol related problems but has not since had any problems with alcohol.
In the summer of 2004 after 212 appearances and 6 goals at QPR, Leeds United signed Carlisle on a bosman free transfer. He spent one year at Leeds, playing 38 matches and finding the net 4 times before moving on. As the 2005/2006 season drew closer Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd came in for Carlisle and signed him for a bargain fee of £100,000 as part of his rebuilding.
In his first season at Watford Carlisle played in rotation with Malky Mackay and Jay Demerit as part of the defence which saw Watford finish in 3rd place and gain promotion to the Premiership. Although Carlisle suffered a dip in form and a thigh injury which caused him to missing the latter part of the season, including the play-off final where Watford beat his former employers Leeds 3-0.
