Clarence Island (61°12′S 054°05′W) is 18 km (12 mi) long and the easternmost of the South Shetland Islands. The name dates back to at least 1821 and is now established in international usage. Ernest Shackleton spotted Clarence Island on his Legendary Boat Voyage but landed on Elephant Island.

Mount Irving, 2 300 meters high, rises 3 km north of Cape Bowles, the southernmost point. There are two small islands 1.5 km east of Clarence Island, the northern one is called Sugarloaf Island, at 61°11'S, 054°00'W.
