Claremont Road, Leytonstone

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Claremont Road was a road in Leytonstone, London, demolished during the construction of a road linking London's A102(M) motorway with the M11 motorway.

It was the site of part of a major anti-road protest from 1992 to 1994, aimed at preventing the motorway from being built, and at changing the then UK Government policy of road-building.

About 200 people took residence either in the condemned terraced houses in the road or in the road itself over the two years of the protest. In the end the bill for the UK taxpayer was reported to be over £1 million in police costs alone.
