Clamperl (パールル Pāruru ?) is one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon from the Pokémon Franchise - a series of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri.

It is an interesting Pokémon in that it is the only Pokémon in Ruby and Sapphire besides Seadra who evolves when traded holding an item. It can evolve to either Gorebyss while holding the Deepseascale or Huntail while holding the Deepseatooth. The player is given a choice between one of these two items after he/she finds the Scanner item on the Abandoned Ship and takes it to Mr. Stern. Clamperl are found in underwater areas, and are fairly common.

The name 'Clamperl' probably comes from the attack Clamp (or the word clam) and pearl.

[edit] Biology

Clamperl is protected by a sturdy shell. Once in a lifetime, it makes a magnificent pearl. This pearl, created upon evolution, is said to be infused with a mysterious energy and is used by Spoink as a focus for its psychic abilities.

Clamperl grows while being protected by its rock-hard shell. When its body becomes too large to fit inside the shell, it is sure evidence that it is getting close to evolution. Yet its shell is not only good for protection - it is also used for clamping and catching prey. A fully grown Clamperl's shell will be scored with nicks and scratches all over.

[edit] In the Video Games

Clamperls can be found in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. They live in patches of seaweed underwater, where they are most common.

When first caught it will already know Clamp, Whirlpool, Water Gun and Iron Defense. These are the only non-TM moves it will learn until evolution. This is triggered by trading it while having Clamperl hold a deepseascale (to have it evolve into Gorebyss) or a deepseatooth (to have it evolve into Huntail).

[edit] Anime Appearances

Clamperl has appeared in two episodes of the anime. First in the Pokémon episode 369 "Clamperl of Wisdom", it was one of three items that Team Rocket tried to steal (the other two being a blue pearl and a Spoink). Two episodes later, two trainers each had a Clamperl that they wanted to evolve.

[edit] Manga Appearances

Clamperl has not yet appeared in the Pokémon Adventures manga.

[edit] In the TCG

Clamperl has only appeared on two trading cards: In EX Hidden Legends and EX Legend Maker. Both of them are common water-type cards.
