She appeared in the soap opera Emmerdale as rich bitch Kim Tate and in the women's prison drama Bad Girls as Wing Governor Karen Betts from 2000 to 2003 but returned in 2004 for four episodes. A classic quote to Jim Fenner in Bad Girls in Series 5 when she caught him out was "Your balls are going on my mantelpiece

Kim Tate was a classic soap character and had storylines including having an affair wtih Neil Kincaid in 1992. Remarrying Frank Tate again and then started an affair with David Glover in 1995 which the viewers loved and was the centre of attention for that year. Then in 1996 she broke up with David because Frank offered her a million pounds to return to Home Farm to live with him and Kim chose Frank and had a baby and named it James. However in Christmas Kim wanted to leave the village but David returned to Home Farm and they started their relationship again but a fire broke out and David was killed after saving baby James. in 1997 Kim faked her own death and returned to shock Frank who had spent time in prison for her murder and gave Frank a heart attack and watched him die and a classic line " You're a dinosaur Frank, and you know what happened to them". After Frank's will was read out Kim had taken a half share of Home Farm and then started seeing Steve Merchant who also had a share in Home Farm too. In 1998 Kim and Steve were involved in a hit and run accident and later had to appear in court. On the day of trial in January 1999 Kim attacked her former stepson Chris and left him there to die and took his money and went and left Emmerdale in a helicopter with son James leaving Steve to take the blame and being sent to prison. No one has never seen or heard from her since she left, even though she sent flowers to Emmerdale when Seth Armstrong died in 2005. Fans of Kim Tate have always wanted her to return. It was rumoured in 2005 by The Sun that she was to return and clash with Sadie King at Home Farm but it never happened. It remains to be seen whether she will ever return to the show as she is one of the most popular character in the shows history.

She was married for 10 years to actor Peter Amory who played her step-son Chris Tate in Emmerdale. The marriage broke-up after she left the series, though according to her book, they are in the process of rekindling their romance.

She appeared in Series 4 of Strictly Come Dancing that started on 2006-10-07, partnered with professional dancer Brendan Cole. Claire and Brendan were knocked out of the competition at the end of the eighth show, and were the ninth couple to leave.
