[edit] Community
Most children in Clackamas attend one of 6 elementary schools, Sunrise Middle School, and Clackamas High School. Clackamas belongs to the North Clackamas School District.
The Clackamas Town Center, a large shopping mall, plays a major role in the community. It is currently under construction to make way for a 20-screen movie theater, and 40 new stores and restaurants.
Before the interstate highway (I-205)came through the area in the 1960s, Clackamas, although never incorporated as a city, had a distinct geography and identity. "Downtown" Clackamas, such as it was, centered on Clackamas Grade School, built in the 1930s and still functioning as of 2006 as Clackamas Elementary School. Across the street from the school were the Clackamas Congregational Church and the Odd Fellows Lodge, both important centers of community life. Clackamas Cemetery, a mile north of the school, became the resting place of many of the community's citizens, and on Memorial Day in the 1930s, the young students from Clackamas Grade School would march up 82nd Avenue to the cemetery to lay flowers on the graves and to hear inspirational speeches[citation needed].
