Explaining (at Chris's request) the above reference to "Headings" - I added the two headings that are now showing on this page. We seem to have a convention here that says one should not edit OTHER people's work on User pages or the corresponding talk pages; and adding headings might go close to breaching that convention if it changed the flavour of a paragraph even though not touching the words themselves. I was reading your comments on substitutability and I think that you are correct. I am tempted to either speedily delete it or (perhaps even better) move it to wiktionary. Good to meet you too! I've been working my way through the list of deadend articles (alongside a couple of other wikipedians) and have built up a list of articles that I will propose deletion of. Substitutability is on that list. Now I've mastered the process of putting things on VfD I'll start on that. On substitutability I want to do a little more research to see if the concept has been applied elsewhere, in which case there might be a real article. --Cje 07:52, 6 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I wish I knew what the right answer was - I would say trust Nalis, since it's an official government web site, but they are not absolutely accurate, and most of their stuff comes from newspaper stories. It's a shame that the Trinidad and Tobago Gazzette stuff they have online only covers 2002-2003 - that would, of course, be the official word on it. (Personally I think that "Spiritual/Shouter Baptist Lib. Day" or "Spiritual Baptist/Shouter Baptist Liberation Day" would be better phrasing, but I can't re-name a public holiday even if it is badly named. Guettarda 17:53, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Automatic differentiation
Hi, you added automatic differentiation to the section "Mathematics used in computer algebra systems". Of course it is possible for a CAS to use it, just as a CAS could use any numerical technique for numerical problems, e.g. interval arithmetic or Gaussian quadrature, but these techniques remain inherently numerical, and not symbolic. I am also not aware of any CAS's using automatic differentiation—perhaps you are thinking of using CASs to generate code for it, e.g. http://www.maplesoft.com/products/thirdparty/econotron/examples.aspx. [edit] Deadend pages
I have noticed your excellent work on deadend pages, and I apologized for dumping several hundred more just when it seemed like you were making progress. There is always some lag between the updates and when the database was actually scanned. In this case my update seems to be listing everything that was a deadend three days ago. This means there are several that I added that had been linked in the interim, which unfortunately means some work will need to be duplicated. - SimonP 12:37, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

I think it's just a few people whose latest wheeze is apparently to use VFU make an end-run around VfD. Their idea is apparently that any admin should be able to delete freely, but if another admin disputes this they're supposed to take it to VFU (first I've heard of that!) instead of just resurrecting and expanding as has been my practice (and a very successful one, too) for some time now. My defense if I get trouble from them is to list the resurrected article on VfD; in a shootout between VFU (discussion of an article you can't see) and VfD (discussion of an article you can see), VfD will win every time. --Tony SidawayTalk 17:50, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

I don't see any problem with marking it for deletion. Honestly, when I post the comment on the author's talk page I don't read the articles very closely to see if they should be deleted or not. 9 times out of 10 my invitation to the author to clean up the article is not acted upon anyway. Hi Chris. That was good hunting by you - I had looked around briefly but didn't find a suitable article! I've made Orientation (housing) a redirect to Passive solar since this is quicker. [edit] Dead-end pages
To be honest, I haven't actually been working directly from dead-end pages; I've just happened to occasionally hit articles that were listed there in other ways (like cleaning up stub categories). I'll try to remember to keep an eye on DEPd if I see it in the "what links here" list when I'm doing cleanup on an article, but I've actually done most of my editing not knowing that articles were listed on DEP to begin with. Back in July 2005 you moved some new material into Jacobin/Sandbox from Jacobin. Nothing ahs happened to it since then, and it has now appeared on WP:DEP. Is this going anywhere? At the moment I'm thinking of proposing it for deletion through the proposed deletion, but thought I'd get your input first.

[edit] Help needed on handling a dispute with a relatively new user
I found DLR P86 stock and DLR P89 stock on WP:DEP and proposed both for deletion: I left standard warning on User talk:Unisouth. The author immediately removed both tags without comment or explanation. I then marked P86 article for AfD (with a comment in the proposal that discussion should be on P89 too); I added a comment to the talk page that proposed deletion tags should not be removed without explanation - at least in the edit history. The author has immediately removed the AfD tag, though at least they explained why they thought the article is important in the edit history.
I think that both articles are at a level of detail that doesn't merit inclusion - but if consensus is against me that's fine. In that case will need some real work; wikification, copy edit, giving the context etc.
Unisouth joined in February 2006, so is still relatively new. I note that they have 1 24 hour ban for 3RR violation and multiple warnings on copyright for images. I'm feeling that I'm faced with a Docklands Light Railway enthusiast who would appear to have little interest in learning how Wikipedia works.
Some advice on how to proceed nicely would be appreciated! Although I've been around Wikipedia and Dead End Pages for a while, and have had a number of exchanges with other editors, this is the first time I've had dealings with someone who is not playing by the Wikipedia rules.
