The City of Adelaide Pipe Band is a grade two pipe band, based in City of Adelaide, South Australia. The band has been successful in the Australian competition in the past, and placed 4th overall in the New Zealand and South Pacific Championships, in 1999. The band is led by Pipe Major Brett Tidswell and Drum Sergeant Greg Bassani, and is a member of the South Australian Pipe Band Association.

[edit] History

After acknowledging much activity in the pipe band scene of the late 1980s, particularly in Victoria and Western Australia, the City of Adelaide Pipe Band was formed to provide a successful competitor at all levels of contest, and an entertaining alternative to the city's brass band for the public. Forming in 1991, the band wore the Drummond of Perth tartan, with several other uniform pieces having the coat of arms of the City of Adelaide.

By 1992, the band was already competing in the South Australian competition at a grade two level, and earned its first title at the South Australian Pipe Band Championships, in Greenock. One year later, it also claimed the Victorian Pipe Band Championships in Ringwood, while again claiming victory in the South Australian competition — a title that remained in the band's hands for a further decade.

During 1998, the band competed at a grade one level, and achieved the ultimate title in the Australian Pipe Band world, first place in the Australian Pipe Band Championships held at Newcastle. In the same year, the band also received first-place prizes in South Australia (grade two) and Victoria (grades one and two).

More recently, the band moved away from its Drummond of Perth Tartan to the Blue Ramsay in 2006. City of Adelaide was re-graded to grade 2 in 2006.
