[edit] World Citizenship
CMS strives to inculcate in students the philosophy of 'Jai Jagat' (Glory be to the World!). This thought empowers them with a global perspective and the concept of world citizenship.
All CMS events begin with a prayer for world peace. World Peace Prayer Ceremonies are organized under the aegis of World Peace Prayer Society of Japan with its headquarters in New York.
The World Peace Prayer Society - founded by renowned Japanese philosopher Masahisa Goi - also promotes planting of Peace Poles which are four-sided obelisks with the prayer 'May Peace Prevail on Earth' written in different languages on all four sides. The Peace Poles are said to be like acupuncture pins on the acupressure points of the globe. To date, the Society has planted over 200,000 such Peace Poles in more than 130 countries of the world.
The world is a small village. Globalism is understanding that the world is a home of all nations and peoples who live in it. It is no longer possible to live in isolation of each other. The sooner we recognise this, the more we can prepare our children for the future. CMS educational system strives to break down the existing narrow domestic walls and to open up new possibilities for global cooperation in all fields of human endeavour. It seeks to develop in children the oneness of God and mankind as well as unity of all religions. The young minds are exposed to the culture and aspirations of all.
City Montessori School, popularly known as CMS, is the world's largest private school in a single city, recognized by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination for ICSE and ISC.
Pre-Primary & Primary Education: The School admits boys and girls between the ages of 2 and 5 as follows: (a) Montessori : 2 to 3 years of age (Play Group) (b) Nursery : 4 years of age (c) K.G. : 5 years of age
CMS has adopted the Montessori method of preschool education. The school appoints Montessori trained teachers of proven ability and temperament to take care of the little ones and to initiate them into learning by doing.
A British expert, Ms. Jo Lewington Hignett, spent a year to develop Montessori classrooms and a workshop for classroom materials for CMS. Other Montessori trained international teachers and trainers frequently assist the CMS programme so that it matches world standards of Montessori preschool education.
"The discovery of the powers of the child is the most important discovery humanity has ever made and uncovers the very roots of our life."
[edit] Dr. Maria Montessori
Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870. Maria was a woman far ahead of her time and became the first woman to be granted a diploma as a certified physician in Italy. She became the first female doctor in Italy. As a scientist and physician, she was curious and willing to experiment and to seek answers to questions not previously considered. In later years, she became an educator and anthropologist. Studying children in all conditions throughout the world, she discovered universal principles underlying the development of all children. She stressed the need to change our attitudes about children and their treatment.
The Montessori curriculum is focused on the process and issues of science: the study of life, the laws and structure of the universe, and how humanity has struggled throughout history to put our understanding to practical use. At the same time, we seek to captivate the mind of each child and fill her with a sense of wonder at the grandeur of the universe, the simple beauty of the physical laws, and the miracle of life. To inspire within a child deep sense of the philosophy of science as the process through which humanity has built up our little store of knowledge-asking questions, observing systematically, collecting and analyzing data, and controlled experiments-is to prepare the child for a lifetime of learning.
Dr. Montessori recognized the value of her discoveries and truly believed that she had discovered much more than an educational theory. She saw a vision of a new world where children who grew up in an atmosphere of peace and respect extended that attitude into adult life.
There are various phases through which a human being grows through his life as he grows from a child to an adult.
To have the knowledge of these phases in mind and their related psychological factors is essential for imparting good education.
After this, he steps into this world either as one amongst others or one different from others. This depends upon what education we impart to them and how we are able to unleash their potential.
The Montessori classroom prepares its students for each successive developmental plane, allowing them to take responsibility for their own education making choices, changing and becoming unique human beings. In our system of education, we believe that learning is a continuous process and that parents, teachers and students are all partners to learning. CMS has been trying to follow the Montessori pattern of teaching to the best possible extent in the Indian environment.
