Citrus Series
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Citrus Series or Battle for Florida refers to the geographical rivalry and interleague matchup between Major League Baseball's Tampa Bay Devil Rays, an American League team based in Tampa, Florida, and the Florida Marlins, a National League team based in Miami, Florida. This can also be referred to as a Sunshine Series, since Florida's state nickname is the "Sunshine State." The term "Citrus Series" derives from the fact Florida is known for its mass production of citrus products.
In the National Football League, the term Battle for Florida also refers to games played between either the Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Miami Dolphins. The term stopped being used when a third Florida based NFL team, the Jacksonville Jaguars entered the league in 1995.
