Along with regencies / kabupaten, cities / kota are subdivisions of Indonesian Provinces. Each ciy is headed by a mayor. Cities are subdivided into sub-districts / kecamatan

In 1999 the term municipality / kotamadya is abolished by Local Government Law Number 22 and changed into City / kota
