Circular Quay is a thoroughbred race horse foaled on February 26, 2004 in Kentucky. With 1995 Belmont Stakes and Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch as his sire, the two-year-old placed in the November 4 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and is a major contender for the Triple Crown in 2007.

Circular Quay won his maiden at Churchill Downs in June, and after his subsequent victories in the Bashford Manor Stakes and the Hopeful Stakes, he found himself on top of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Division poll. Then came the October 7 Lane's End Breeders' Futurity, a race in which he was the heavy 2-5 favorite. With jockey Garrett Gomez in the saddle, Quay rode to a disappointing second, 1 3/4 lengths behind the winner Great Hunter.

[edit] Breeders' Cup Juvenile

Despite the setback due to his loss, Circular Quay was still set as the 5-2 favorite[1] for the prestigious Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and was ranked second in the Juvenile division poll. In the Juvenile, Circular Quay was once again jockeyed by Garrett Gomez, as he was in the Futurity. The field was undeniably the best that Quay had faced, and featured a rematch with Great Hunter as well as new challenges from top contenders such as Scat Daddy and King of the Roxy. Despite the big names, the race was won by the 15-1 underdog Street Sense by a record margin of 10 lengths.[2] The race could set a favorite for the 2007 Triple Crown, and these horses will likely meet again.
