[edit] Questions about the coolest piece of mall architecture ever

I remember seeing a large carousel in the late 1980s. Where was it? Was it in the Central Court? In the middle of the 1990s, I do not remember seeing it anymore. Did they take it down? During which years was it there? Interestingly, there was a picture of it on the internet about five years ago.

Another question about the Central Court: How was it connected up with the rest of the mall? I could not figure that out from the pictures on your website, even though I studied them for quite a while. It seemed to me that two of the sides were facing two chain stores, Penney's and Montgomery Ward. Could you actually enter the stores from the Central Court? I could not see any entrances. I also wondered in which corner the staircase was located.

Here is another question: Where was Funtastic Nathan's located in the 1980s? I know that it was part of Cinder Alley, but it was so large that I wondered whether they had torn down the walls between several former stores in order to make room for it.Boab 05:04, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

The previous post was also sent to me as an email. For all who had similar questions, here is a slightly edited version of my response email.

Regarding your questions:

I believe the carousel was installed as part of the 1984 remodel the mall went through. The carousel was a hand-crafted Italian one, and although I don't remember the exact price, it was well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. This stayed within the mall until around the time it was abated. I have no idea where the carousel went after its stay in the mall, but I'd be willing to bet it didn't end up like the rest of the mall. Yes, the carousel was located in the Center Court of the mall, near the Montgomery Ward entrance. It might have been moved around over the years, I'm not sure. I have attached an image of the center court with the carousel visible on the right hand side.

The center court was an interesting piece of work. Indeed, the square-shaped area had was bordered by the two anchors, JC Penney and Montgomery Wards. The latter had previously been a store called Denver Dry Goods. On the sides that were bordered by these stores, a hallway leading to the rest of the mall was attached as well. On the remaining sides of the court were various stores and mall entrances. I've attached a floor plan of the mall as well.

Funtastic's was indeed located in Cinder Alley. I do not know when it was installed, however. It lasted until the mall's demise. If you look on the mall plan I attached, in the lower level, the large tenant space between Joslins and JC Penney labeled "132" is Funtastic's. Because this space wasn't always Funtastics, it's probably safe to assume some walls were taken down to accomodate the new place. I have a demolition photo of this place. I'll attach that for you too.
