Cinema du look

Cinéma du look / Cinema du Look / Cinema-du-Look is a term used to describe a French film movement of the 1980s and the early years of the 1990s. It is a term meant to indicate the promotion of style over content. The majority of criticism is in the belief that the works are superficial and lacking in meaningful content. Although the films were unpopular with critics they were a hit with young audiences of the time. In retrospect however it has also been debated that some of the films can be seen as a critique of the flashy MTV style media that was said to inspire these movies in the first place. Others point to the lyrical qualities of the story lines, a dry sense of humor and their championing of the outsider. In short there is a feeling that these films deserve more merit than they have been given.
The movement was in contrast to the preceding French Cinema traditions of the Auteur and Nouvelle Vague of the 1960s and 1970s.
