CineForm, Inc is a private company that develops compressed digital intermediate ("DI") technology and products for high-resolution video and film production, post-production, and digital cinema presentation. CineForm's technology is based around its high-resolution (HD / 2K / 4K) CineForm Intermediate codec and its real-time video processing software. CineForm's products work in conjunction with NLE, compositing, and visual processing products from others in the industry, such as Adobe Systems, Apple Computer, Discreet, Sony, etc. CineForm was founded in 2001 and is headquartered in Carlsbad, CA.

[edit] History

CineForm was founded by David Taylor, David Newman, and Brian Schunck, all of whom have spent most of their careers emersed in semiconductor and software video technologies. The CineForm Intermediate codec, which underlies most CineForm products, was developed for very high visual quality and multi-generation requirements of professionals involved in video and film post-production. The Company's focus on codec-related DI technologies for post-production differs from most historical codec development which has tended to focus on tape-based source acquisition or video/film distribution - not post-production. The company has recently been expanding into acquisition for digital film-replacement cameras with its CineForm RAW codec, plus film scanning equipment and digital cinema presentation.

In 2003, with its product Aspect HD, CineForm was the first company to offer real-time video editing software for HDV cameras. In its first National Association of Broadcasters ("NAB") appearance in 2003, Aspect HD won a "Best of Show" award for its support of real-time HDV editing. Aspect HD shipped in production simultaneously with JVC's release of the industry's first HDV camera -- the JY-HD10U -- in the summer of 2003.

In 2005 the theatrical release occurred for "Dust to Glory", a documentary film by Dana Brown about the Baja 1000 race in Mexico. Dust to Glory used CineForm's 10-bit Prospect HD in conjunction with Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5, and was the first film to complete post-production using a 10-bit compressed DI format which was then exported to a film-recorder for making the 35mm release print.

In 2006 CineForm announced its "CineForm RAW" format that records data directly from high-resolution progressive Bayer sensors inside digital film-replacement cameras to internal media such as a laptop drive. The first camera to use this new technology is the Silicon Imaging SI-1920HDVR which enters production in late 2006. So impressive was the pre-production model of the SI camera at NAB 2006 that filmmaker Simon Hansen of Atomic Visual Effects in South Africa carried the prototype back with him to South Africa to shoot his feature film "Spoon" (http://indiefilmlive.blogspot.com/) which completed production in July 2006. Simultaneous with the release of CineForm RAW as a recording format, CineForm has designed a real-time RAW editing workflow in its Prospect HD that is compatible with existing industry editing and effects tools.
