The Competition and CINE Golden Eagle Award
Renowned for the Golden Eagles it awards for excellence in documentary and other informational film and video production, CINE will celebrate its first half-century in 2007. Founded in 1957 by a consortium representing business, education, and government to depict American life and thought realistically for a global audience, CINE continues to recognize and foster the highest quality of non-theatrical film and video production through its semi-annual competitions. Along with these competitions, CINE offers development workshops for established film and video professionals, as well as mentoring programs for students. CINE works closely with the University Film & Video Association to encourage the work of student producers in film schools throughout the U.S. Recipients of CINE Golden Eagles include Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, John Lasseter, Barbara Kopple, Charles Guggenheim, Ken Burns, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Robert Zemeckis, Mike Nichols, Robert Altman, George Lucas, Spike Lee, Mel Brooks and many others distinguished for their work with the moving image.
The CINE Golden Eagle Film and Video Competitions, held each spring and fall, involve hundreds of volunteer media and content specialists who judge entries in several moving-image genres. Over the years, the judging procedure has evolved into an efficient multi-stage jury process to determine which productions are deserving of the coveted CINE Golden Eagle Award. The CINE Golden Eagle Award acknowledges high quality professional production in a variety of content categories, as well as in student and independent works. Student productions are created not only in universities or graduate schools, but also in high schools, and even middle and elementary schools. Quality independent productions, produced by individuals who are not affiliated with the media industry are also recognized.
In 2005, more than 400 jurors on over 150 juries judged over 1,000 entries in 28 categories. The names and descriptions of the productions receiving awards are included on the Winners page of this website. All winners receive award notification and a distinctive certificate by mail. Winners may also purchase the prestigious Golden Eagle statue for their production. Eligible productions receiving a CINE Golden Eagle Award may be selected for overseas competitions, and CINE stands ready to assist producers and sponsors entering their productions in international film events worldwide. Additional Awards - The Special Jury Awards, The Masters Series Awards and The Award of Excellence, Special Jury Awards are presented to the best productions in the various CINE categories. All CINE Golden Eagle Award winners automatically become eligible for these awards. All of these winners are announced at the annual Awards Event. All of the CINE Special Jury Award winners automatically become eligible for the major CINE Masters Series Awards (for Professional Broadcast, Non-Broadcast, News and Independent winners), and the CINE Award of Excellence for the Student Division winner. These awards recognize the "Best of the Best". A specially selected and prestigious judging committee determines these CINE winners. These awards are also announced at the annual CINE Awards Event, and winners are presented with a special trophy.
