[edit] History

The Cimmerians were originally from Earth, but were brought to Cimmeria by the Asgard to be protected from the Goa'uld, also known as the Ettins to the Cimmerians. According to a holographic message of Thor, the High Council of Asgard had designated Cimmeria a safe world for developing sentient species by unanimous decree, Era 40.73.29, and the Goa'uld System Lords were so informed. The planet was subsequently included in the Protected Planets Treaty.

All Goa'uld, even their Jaffa underlings, are taught the location of Cimmeria for one reason: never go there. For thousands of years, any Goa'uld or Jaffa that went to Cimmeria was never seen again. Cimmeria was protected by Asgard technology, including Thor's Hammer. The Hammer protected the Stargate on their world by transporting all arriving Goa'uld to a maze-like network of caves leading to the Hall of Mjollnir in which escape resulted in the death of a Goa'uld by an Asgard weapon. The Cimmerians themselves refer to the weapon inside the Hall of Mjollnir as the actual Thor's Hammer, and not the Obelisk at the Stargate which scans all travellers to Cimmeria. But since both pieces of technology exhibit the same hammer motiff and design, it is reasonable to conclude that people would identify the Obelisk with the same name.

When SG-1 went to Cimmeria, one of their team members, a Jaffa named Teal'c, was transported to the caves by Thor's Hammer along with Jack O'Neill who tried to rescue him. While the human O'Neill was free to leave, Teal'c was not as he needed his Goa'uld symbiote to survive. And worse yet, the caves were inhabited by an Unas, who was bent on killing both Teal'c and O'Neill. In the course of freeing Teal'c and killing the Unas, SG-1 was forced to destroy the Hammer device. [1]

The long-term effects of SG-1's actions were disastrous. Without the Hammer to defend Cimmeria, the Cimmerians were invaded by the Goa'uld Heru'ur. SG-1 tried to assist the Cimmerians in fighting the Goa'uld, but when Heru-ur threatened to commit genocide against the entire Cimmeria population if SG-1 did not surrender, the team was forced to halt their struggle. Fortunately, Daniel Jackson and Samantha Carter were able to make contact with the Asgard Supreme Commander Thor, who soon arrived at Cimmeria by ship to repel Heru-ur and replace the destroyed Hammer. One interesting fact about the Hammer device that Thor replaced the destroyed one with is that it is able to identify Teal'c, thus it will not transport him into the caves should he return to Cimmeria in the future.
