Ciguapa
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Ciguapa is a fictional creature originated from the Dominican Republic. They are myth-like women that supposedly live in the high mountains in the Dominican Republic. Characteristics are that they are blue or black, with long black hair to cover their nude body. Since they are nocturnal, they come out at night to look for food. An odd feature to these women is that their feet are backwards, so you can never quite tell where the footprints came from. In some cases, people believe that they bring death, and are warned not to look them in the eye.
In some cases ciguapas are represented in a lighter view. In Julia Alvarez's book, The Secret Footprints, ciguapas are kind creatures. They live in the ocean with seashell and seaweed covered caves. Like the myth, they come out at night for food, and are afraid of humans. The main character, Guapa, is warned that if she gets to close to humans that they will capture them and study them and make them take baths.
