Ciaran MacMathuna

Ciaran MacMathuna, was an Irish broadcaster and music collector. He is a recognised authority on Irish Music and has lectured extensively on the subject.

MacMathuna was born in Limerick and spent his early years in Mulgrave Street. He was schooled at CBS Sexton St. After college he worked as a teacher and later at the Placenames Commission. He later worked at Radio Eireann, and included programmes he participated were

  • Ceol Tire
  • A Job of Journeywork
  • Humours of Donnybrook

MacMathuna spent the rest of his career collecting traditional music in such areas as Sliabh Luachra, Clare and Sligo and well as periodically broadcasting. His long running Sunday morning radio programme Mo Cheol Thu ran from the 1960s to 2000s and was a miscellany of archive music and folklore.
