Chwezi

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chwezi (also called the Bachwezi or Kitara) were a semi-historical group of rulers of Uganda, said to have ruled between the 14th and 16th centuries AD.

Though legends depict the Chwezi as supernatural beings, archaeological evidence at Bigo and Mubende has confirmed their historical existence as a people. Following their 15th-century displacement by the Bito, the Chwezi appear to have moved south into present-day Rwanda and Burundi; the Tutsi people are often speculated to be their descendants.
