[edit] About Me
My name is Ciaran Chu. I was born in Bury St. Edmunds on the 1st December, 1991. Since then, my family has migrated to Australia, where I have enjoyed life immensely for the past ten years. My interests include flying, music, computing, driving, strategic video games and other intellectual activites.
[edit] My Interests
[edit] Flying
My interest in flying has been most definitely influenced by my early exposure to aircraft; as a young by my father would take me on day trips to London Stansted, where I would be perplexed and amazed by the various machines that passed overhead. This passion has carried through my life, and although I only recently abandoned my ambitions of an airline pilot, my lifelong dream is to get a Private Pilot's License and fly places.
Another major passion of mine is music. Six years ago I was started on the piano. At first I was reluctant but as time went on (and with lots of encouragement - thanks mum) I gradually became more independant with my practice and I displayed a genuine interest in learning new things. I started by listening to songs I wanted to learn over and over, while trying to play along on the piano. This worked to a certain degree, but the day I started to learn chords was when my real fun started. My primary school was hosting a musical and I volunteered my "expertise". I was somewhat bewildered to find that my music was little but a single treble-clef staff and some note-names above. My teacher pointed out that they represented triads - and I understood.
I then went home to a musical dictionary, and sure enough, there were the triads, just like on the score. After much experimentation, I got the left hand playing the triad, and the right hand playing the melody.Eventually I experimented with rhythms on the left hand. After three years, lots of practice and musical experience means that I have mastered playing from chords and I now find music a much richer experience - even if I don't play solo.
Whilst at primary school I also showed an interest in guitar. I took it up for two years - musical knowledge helped a lot and I picked up the instrument (no pun intended) quickly. Sadly, with the end of primary school came also my guitar lessons - my guitar sits sadly in its case in the wardrobe, hoping one day that it will be taken out and played once again.
My next instrument of call was the viola. I started last year, and once again, musical knowledge was a great help and although I'm putting it down at the end of this year, I'm satisfied with the experience of learning a string instrument and learning the alto clef.
My new interest is in drums and percussion. In the future hopefully I will undertake drum lessons. This is more than likely due to the exposure to drums and percussion from playing in the section for the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra (NRSO). My viola teacher, Barry Singh, is a very talented musician, and is the conductor of the NRSO. One day he invited me to come along to a rehearsal - on the day I was given the oppurtunity to play in the next concert. While it was only one piece in the program, it was the first step and since then I have returned to play more instruments and more pieces, and the experience I gained will never be outdone.
[edit] Computing
My father always had an interest in computers, and naturally, I took after him. As I grew older, I experimented with different features and learned many things through trial and error. After a brief obsession with the Internet (combined with the lack of a connection on my computer), I felt possessed to put that browser to use somehow. While sifting through a book on computers, I discovered HTML. I learned it avidly - I have since stopped learning but I consider myself competent in it, as well as CSS.
I have also found knowledge in other areas of IT. For a near-fifteen-year-old, most people are surprised at how much I know about hardware, networking, administration and (admittedly) the general exploitation of loopholes in user restrictions. In fact, the IT staff at my school generally recognise me as an "overly competent" student, quite possibly backed-up by the fact that I have set up my own shared folders on supposedly unusable computers using DOS, which is technically disabled, among other things!
