Churchill Square (St. John's)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Churchill Square is a shopping area in St. John's, Newfoundland, located on Elizabeth Avenue near Memorial University of Newfoundland. "The Square", as it is often referred to as, is two parallel rows of shops on each side of a parking lot. The left-hand row (as viewed from Elizabeth Avenue) is much more uniform, and houses condominiums on the upper levels.
A larger building between the two rows, Terrace on the Square, contains a clock tower and a small shopping mall with several more shops, as well as business offices on the top levels.
Facing the buildings, on the opposite side of Elizabeth Avenue, is a statue of Winston Churchill.
[edit] Miscellanea
- Terrace on the Square was originally known as "Terrace in the Square". The name was changed due to concerns about the original name's initialism. Both names are used in common usage.
- It is somewhat tradition for local highschool's (Such as Gonzaga and Holy Heart) to hold fights there. The contestants will usually have a fist-fight on the sidewalk between Terrace on the Square and Big Bite Pizza (Left Side of the square). The police are often called during such events and the fighting students will often flee the scene never to be successfully charged. This has not happened in the last 10 years, if not longer.
