Chukai
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chukai is the principal town of Kemaman, Terengganu, Malaysia.
The name "Chukai" means "tax" in Malay. It is believed to come about because it used to be a riverine port during British colonial times and tax and excise was collected there. Chukai is also a major business hub in southern Terengganu as many fish merchants exploit the strategic Kemaman Port to export fish prodcuts elsewhere in the region. Its location in the middle of Kuantan, Kerteh and Kuala Terengganu also makes it an important transit point.
