Christmas Concerto

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arcangelo Corelli's Christmas Concerto is one of his most famous pieces. It is officially known as Concerto Grosso in G-minor, opus 6, number 8. Written in 1705, it is approximately 14 minutes long and contains 6 movements. The six movements are as follows:

  1. Vivace-Grave
  2. Allegro
  3. Adagio-Allegro- Adagio
  4. Vivace
  5. Allegro
  6. Largo. Pastorale ad libitum

According to the New Oxford Companion to Music, the work gains its name from the inscription "fatto per la notte di Natale" ("Made for Christmas Night"), and the closing Pastorale evokes the scene in Bethlehem.

The third movement was used in the 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, and is track 7 on the movie's soundtrack. [1]
