Christine Chapel is a fictional character in the Star Trek universe, played by Majel Barrett, who later married Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. She appears in many episodes of the original series and in some of the films.

The character was written for Barrett, who Roddenberry was at the time conducting an extra-marital affair with, after a previous character, Number One, that he had written for her, had been dropped.

[edit] Appearances

Nurse Chapel made her debut in the episode "The Naked Time", where she is simply known as "Christine" and she also confessed her love for Mr. Spock. She later became the central character in the episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of?", where it is revealed that she gave up her career in bioresearch and her primary motive of serving on board the USS Enterprise was to find her lost fiancée Dr. Roger Korby. She finds him on Exo III in 2266, but learns that he transferred his mind into an android's body. He is destroyed by another android later in the same episode. Chapel elected to stay on the Enterprise and works as a nurse under Dr. Leonard McCoy. She is romantically interested in the first officer, Mr. Spock, but he doesn't return her feelings, being half-Vulcan (but he generally refrains from being insensitive toward her on the matter).

By the time of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, she has become a doctor. Her final onscreen appearance was in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
