The Christianeum in Hamburg is a very famous "Latin school" (German: Lateinschule) in Hamburg, northern Germany. This school has existed from 1738 as the foundation of King Christian VI of Denmark. The school is housed in a building by Arne Jacobsen.
[edit] History
The first Latin school here was founded as early as 1688 (according to other sources: 1683) in Hamburg-Altona. Decades later the school acquired the status of a famous Gymnasium, the most famous in Hamburg, and was re-founded by Christian VI.
[edit] Present
Nowadays the pupils have to take lessons in Latin from the fifth class. From the ninth class they must decide between Ancient Greek and Russian.
