Christian Chukwu

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christian Chukwu was a stalwart and captain of Enugu Rangers football club and the Nigerian national team in the late seventies. He made history by being the first Nigerian captain to lift the African Nations cup after a 3-0 victory over Algeria in 1980.

He also coached the national teams of Kenya and Nigeria with moderate success. Chukwu was blamed for inept coaching and management of the Nigerian national football team and two games before the qualification campaign was over, he was suspended. In two games - home and away - against eventual group winners Angola, Nigeria failed to win even one of those two encounters. This was blamed on Chukwu and those two crucial failures eventually led to Nigeria failing to qualify for the World Cup, having appeared at the World Cup tournaments since 1994.
