[edit] Background

A superb shot, excellent pilot, strong and intelligent young man. Chris originally served as a pilot for the United States Air Force and trained in the fighting styles of Martial Arts, Boxing, etc. After being discharged for insubordination in 1995 (he rescued a severely injured friend during combat training despite orders to leave the injured man behind), Chris has no way of getting a job after his dishonorable discharge, and becomes a drifter, lacking the desire to do anything more than get drunk as soon as the day began. A chance encounter teamed Chris up with Barry Burton, who immediately realized the young man's potential, (as well as his troubled current state). He was recruited for the newly-created Special Tactics and Rescue Squad (S.T.A.R.S.) Alpha Team. Marked by his skills as a marksman, Chris serves as the team's pointman.[1] [1]

In July of 1998, Alpha Team was deployed to the Arklay Mountains to investigate the disappearance of the S.T.A.R.S.'s Bravo Team unit. In their search of the area, Alpha Team discovered Bravo Team's helicopter and the remains of their pilot, Kevin Dooley. Shortly afterwards, the team was attacked by Cerberus. After witnessing the death of fellow member Joseph Frost at the hands of the Cerberus, Alpha Team was abandoned by their pilot, Brad Vickers, and the remaining stranded members fled into the nearby Arklay Mansion.

Upon further investigation of the residence, Chris and the others discovered that the entire mansion was infested with undead beings and mutants. Moreover, the team also discovered the remains of their Bravo Team compatriots. Chris met up with a survivor of Bravo Team, a medic named Rebecca Chambers. With her help, Chris managed to overcome some of the tougher obstacles in the mansion.

Together, they discovered that the mansion was actually a front for a top-secret facility owned by the Umbrella Corporation that has been harvesting secret "Bio-Organic Weapons" (B.O.W.) developed from the T-Virus. In addition, their team's captain, Albert Wesker, intentionally led S.T.A.R.S. to the mansion in order to test the B.O.W.'s performances and collect combat data. However, it seemed that Wesker was killed by his own creation, the Tyrant, who then went after Chris. After defeating the Tyrant, Rebecca activated the self-destruct system and the two escaped, along with fellow survivors Jill Valentine and Barry Burton. Depending on the game, either Chris or Jill will destroy Tyrant in the end. But in the canon story, Chris destroys Tyrant with the rocket launcher.

After returning to the Raccoon Police Department (R.P.D.), Chris and the remainder of S.T.A.R.S. requested a full-scale investigation of Umbrella's activities. The team's request was denied by the chief of police, Brian Irons and very few people believed their unlikely story. Without any other alternatives left, Chris and the others traveled to Europe to investigate Umbrella's main headquarters and remained hidden until December of 1998.

[edit] Rockfort Island/Antarctic Lab incident

Chris would remain underground until December of 1998, when he received an e-mail from anti-Umbrella supporter Leon S. Kennedy, informing him about his sister, Claire's captivity on Rockfort Island, an Umbrella-owned island. Upon his arrival on the island, Chris met with the prison's warden, Rodrigo Juan Raval, who knew of Claire's whereabouts. Rodrigo was killed shortly thereafter, after being swallowed (and vomited back up) by a gulp worm. Chris also met with his former commander, Wesker, who was surprisingly alive and well, despite his apparent death during the mansion incident. Wesker now held a grudge against Chris for foiling his plans at the mansion.

After narrowly surviving his encounter with Wesker, Chris managed to be reunited with his sister. Together, they confronted and defeated the true head of the Ashford clan, Alexia Ashford. The Redfield siblings escaped from the continent on a jet, but not before Chris was attacked once more by Wesker. The battle reached a deadlock and realizing neither had time to finish the confrontation, both went to their own escape routes. The two have vowed to defeat one another, solidifying their rivalry.

Afterwards, Chris continued his anti-Umbrella activities until Umbrella's shutdown by the American government. His current doings are unknown at this time.

[edit] Appearances

Chris first appeared as the main male hero in the original Resident Evil. As a result, Chris is the character most often associated with the Resident Evil series. Despite his stronger physique, Chris' version of the game is considered to be more difficult than Jill's due to his initial lack of firearms, lower item capacity - six instead of eight - and the omission of items such as the Grenade Launcher and the lock pick. It is often recommended for new players to play the game with Jill first before trying it with Chris. Adding to his appearances, Chris has brown bushy hair and regular face that bear the resemable to Michael Hardy from Virtua Cop series, Richard Miller from Time Crisis series and Thomas Rogan from House of the Dead series.

Despite his omission in the main Resident Evil 2 game, he was featured as an unlockable character in the Extreme Battle mode, first introduced with the Dual Shock Version of the game and later carried over to all subsequent ports (excluding the Nintendo 64 version).

Chris later made a proper return as a main character in Resident Evil Code: Veronica, where he takes over the second half of the game for his sister, Claire Redfield.

Resident Evil 5.

The main character in Resident Evil 5 is Chris Redfield as stated in an information leak from QJ.net.[QJ.net leak.] On that note, the QJ article also says that the game will take place in a fictional country in South America. Although the main character's identity and setting of where Resident Evil 5 will take place has been officially disclosed, producer Jun Takeuchi has commented that the character is "someone that the staff is fond of", with most of the staff (including Takeuchi himself) having worked on the first Resident Evil, which hints at the character being Chris.

Melbourne born actor Charlie Clausen is in talks for playing the role of Chris Redfield in future movie adaptions. In the live-action sequences of the original game, Chris was portrayed by an unknown actor credited as "Charlie". He was voiced by Scott McCulloch, who was uncredited. In Resident Evil Code: Veronica, his voice was provided by Canadian B-list voice actor Michael Filipowich, who used the pseudonym Michael Fipowich. In the 2002 remake of Resident Evil, he was voiced by Joe Whyte. (Also the voice of "Mr. Crabs" from "Sponge Bob Square Pants".)

[edit] Wardrobe

In the original Resident Evil, Chris wore a standard S.T.A.R.S. uniform consisting of grey pants, a green tactical vest with a knife holster, and a white T-shirt. His alternate costume was a casual outfit featuring a brown bomber jacket with a "Made in Heaven" design on the back. In the Saturn version, he wears an unlockable black standard S.T.A.R.S. uniform. In Resident Evil: Director's Cut, his standard outfit is a plain grey T-shirt with shoulder pads and a gun holster.

Although not involved in the main game, in the "Extreme Battle" mode of Resident Evil 2, he still wears his standard S.T.A.R.S. outfit from the first game, but with subtle modifications such as a "Made in Heaven" design on the back and elbow pads.

In Resident Evil Code: Veronica, he wears an olive green outfit with a black S.T.A.R.S. vest. This was a prototype uniform that was scheduled to be adopted by S.T.A.R.S. prior, but wasn't due to the unit's untimely destruction after the mansion incident. Instead, Chris took the prototype outfit with him when he left Raccoon City.

In the Resident Evil remake, his Code: Veronica outfit is unlockable along with an original outfit resembling Jerry Welbach's (Brad Pitt) attire in The Mexican. In Deadly Silence (the Nintendo DS version of the original), Chris' casual outfit from the first game can be unlocked, as well as a ninja outfit in the game's "Rebirth" mode.

  • Chris was originally characterized as a cigarette smoker (as seen in the Japanese opening movie for the original PlayStation version of Resident Evil/Bio-Hazard).,
  • Chris could also be characterized as a cigarette smoker in the character's bad ending and in official artwork published by Capcom.
  • Due to SCEA's strict policy against depiction of tobacco use, the opening and ending scenes of the Resident Evil game were edited.
  • Ironically enough, Chris has a lighter in his default equipment in the GameCube version of the game (which he had to obtain separately in the PlayStation version), as well in Code: Veronica.
