[edit] Background
Chris was born to Wyatt Lightfellow, at the time a member of the Zexen Knights, and his wife Anna in the town of Vinay del Zexay. Chris's early childhood was idyllic, and she dreamed of becoming a knight one day so that she might always be at her father's side. However, the idyll was shattered when her father left one day and never returned--the official word being that he had died in battle. Anna fell ill and died soon after, perhaps due to grief.
The now-orphaned Chris became more determined than ever to follow in her father's footsteps, and enrolled at the Zexen Service Academy at age thirteen. Despite criticism from her fellow knights-in-training that her success was due to nepotism and was impressive only in light of her gender, Chris excelled, graduating in three years and becoming squire to the Knight Captain Galahad.
During a battle against the Grasslanders, both Galahad and his vice-captain Pelize are killed, leaving Chris to give the order to attack and lead Zexen to victory. This turn of events causes Chris to be promoted to acting captain, the leader of the Six Knights of Zexen, and she becomes a cherished hero in the eyes of the people, who call her the "Silver Maiden". Chris is less than thrilled with the ensuing onslaught of adoration.
Chris and her knights later travel to the Grasslands to request a truce, which unbeknownst to them is a part of a plot orchestrated by the Harmonians and the Zexen Council. After agreeing to a truce with the Karayan chief Lucia, Chris leaves, only to receive the report that the Grasslanders are now attacking her forces. Incensed at this sudden act of betrayal, Chris orders her knights to set fire to Karaya Village to allow her troops to escape. In the village she strikes out at a figure lunging at her in the darkness, only realizing afterward that she has killed a child, Hugo's friend Lulu.
While recuperating from this string of events, Chris is invited to the village of Iksay by her fellow knight, Percival, for a festival. While looking alone out over a field of wheat, Chris's thoughts are interrupted by Nash Latkje (who introduces himself to her as Nash Clovis). Nash knows that Iksay is about to be attacked by Grassland forces; he apparently also knows that Chris's father Wyatt, thought to be dead for seventeen years, is actually very much alive. According to him, Wyatt is actually the bearer of a True Rune, and was part of the original "Fire Bringer", being one of the two men who fought directly alongside the Flame Champion (the other being Geddoe).
Chris follows Nash into the Grasslands under the pretense of gathering information for Zexen, determined to learn the truth.
[edit] Character
Chris is an interesting character; she is not only the first woman to ever be a lead in a Suikoden game, but of the three main characters, she is the one who fits the characteristic of the Fighter character most. Whereas Hugo is more of a thief character, wielding a knife and possessing great speed, and Geddoe leans more towards being the Suikoden equivalent of a Mage, Chris is physical-heavy; she is the only main character to start out with a physical attack rune, Pheonix, and also the only character to excel at both Damage and Heavy Damage skills. She also starts off wearing Heavy Armor, and despite a brief period in her chapter 3 where she loses it, she regains it during her chapter 4.
She is extremely distasteful of both the title "White Maiden" and the hero adoration she has received, often correcting characters when they call her the former and sighing when met with adoration; this contrasts with her deep-seated love for the Knights and for the Zexen people, at least at first. She grows increasingly disgusted with the myriad jealousies and affections that have sprung up around her; Chris is an extremely driven and serious person, described by Yun, who may be the most important person in Chris' story, as "serious but kind". She eventually decides to hunt for her father for her own reasons, ignoring what a "silver maiden" (as she calls it, combining the two terms used to describe her in one) would do. Along the way, she eventually inherits her father's rune, the True Water Rune.
Chris is a good person, and though she ordered the Karayan village burnt early in the game, she also specifically ordered that no one be hurt, only launching the attack so that she could save her men from being slaughtered. This showcases the "serious but kind" statement made by Yun- Chris can order the village targeted for her own purposes, but also decides to harm as few people as possible.
It is later discovered, from Geddoe's viewpoint, that the murdered villagers were killed by Boris.
When Chris killed Lulu, Hugo is angry, but another side-effect is on Chris herself; she is deeply torn over having killed a child, ripped up inside over accidentally having slain the boy. Chris' sorrow over this act haunts her, as in scenes with Hugo she constantly pulls herself back, knowing that his anger really is her fault.
It can be assumed- though no games have come out past Suikoden III yet- that Chris will continue to be active in the future, granted immortality by the True Water Rune.
