[edit] Storyline
- "Friends, why have you all sold your souls to the devil!?"
Academia was a school for scientists located on Academia Island. One day, Academia's three best students, Tsukigata, Senda, and Omura felt their talents were being wasted at Academia and rebelled, aiming higher and accepting a position in the organization VOLT. On the night of their departure, Academia students Yuusuke Amamiya, Jou Oohara, Megumi Misaki, Takuji Yano, and Mari Aikawa witnessed their actions. Tsukigata drew a gun on the five and Takuji and Mari bravely stood before their friends to shield them and were killed.
Prior to the pair's deaths, Takuji and Mari were working alongside Yuusuke, Jou, and Megumi in creating a powerful suit strong enough for space exploration -- the night of the murders was just as they were seeing positive results. Witnessing the emotions of the three as they weeped over their lost friends, Professor Hoshi decides to help them complete their works, also while fearing that departure of Tsukigata, Senda and Omura would most likely result in eventual harmful attacks on people and that they should prepare.
Two years later, Academia is launching a shuttle for space exploration. Just then, strange ships flock to the island and total it, taking down the launching shuttle. Yuusuke, Jou and Megumi managed to be part of the small handful of survivors, only to discover that the ones responsible for the attacks were their former friends and classmates, Tsukigata, Senda, and Omura! However, Tsukigata and the others do not anticipate that Yuusuke, Jou, and Megumi will now use their project with Takuji and Mari, becoming the Liveman to fight against their former friends and the evil organization to which they've now pledged allegiance. Later in the series, they are joined by Tetsuya and Junichi, younger brothers of the late Takuji and Mari.
[edit] Characters
[edit] Main characters
[edit] Members
- Yuusuke Amamiya (天宮勇介 Amamiya Yūsuke) / Red Falcon (レッドファルコン Reddo Farukon): A poor student at Academia, but a strong leader and quick thinking under pressure. He is brave and a hardworker. Initially starts as hot-headed and sarcastic, but grows into the role of dependable leader as the series progresses. He likes rock music and working out. He was once in love with Rui Senda, but she didn't love him. Good friends with Kenji during their first year or so at Academia until things went sour between them once Kenji started down a dark path. In the 2001 Sentai direct-to-DVD crossover film Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai, he briefly dueled Gaku Washio (GaoYellow) in a swordfight and then lectured Gaku on the many sword-wielding warriors of the Super Sentai franchise.
- Weapons: Falcon Sword and Falcon Saber
- Attacks: Falcon Break
- Age: 24
- Jou Oohara (大原丈 Ōhara Jō) / Yellow Lion (イエローライオン Ierō Raion): He is at the bottom of the class at Academia. Sportsman and skateboarder. He is short tempered and ready to dive into danger, Jou has the strength to back up his actions. He was once a good friend with Gou and heartbroken when their friendship dissolved once the weak-willed Gou fell into a bad crowd.
- Weapons: Lion Bazooka and Lion Punch
- Attacks: Skateboard Attack
- Age: 21

She is good at swimming and bicycling. She was taught archery by her father. Often criticizes Yuusuke's strategies. A caring figure, feeling even for her enemies. She is very skilled and has fired an arrow from the Dolphin Arrow while riding the MotoDolphin.
- Weapons: Dolphin Arrow
- Age: 19
- Tetsuya Yano (矢野鉄也 Yano Tetsuya) / Black Bison (ブラックバイソン Burakku Baison): The younger brother of Takuji. He is good at boxing. Nearly destroys Gran Tortoise after being taken over by Volt. Generally a good-hearted person, but has a temper and hatred, mostly fueled by his desire for revenge on Kemp for the murder of his brother.
- Weapon: Bison Rod
- Age: 21
- Jun'ichi Aikawa (相川純一 Aikawa Jun'ichi) / Green Sai (Rhino) (グリーンサイ Gurīn Sai): The younger brother of Mari and a rugby player. Calls Tetsuya "Tetsu-chan", looking up to him as an older brother. Youngest member of the team, temporarily leaving high school in order to fight Volt. He was once impregnated and "gave birth" to a monster.
- Weapon: Sai Cutters
- Age: 16 (youngest member)
[Note: Tetsuya first appeared in Episode 28 and Jun'ichi first appeared in Episode 29 , but they both first used their suits in Episode 30] .
[edit] Allies
- Doctor Hoshi (星博士 Hoshi-hakase): Principal of Academia, made the Gran Tortoise and gave the Liveman mecha the ability to combine before dying. He died helping a pregnant woman trapped in the rubble of Academia Island escape.
- Colon (コロン Koron): Female robot built by Dr. Hoshi in charge of Green Tortoise, assists the team. She frequently supports Liveman on foot, car, bike, and Machine Buffalo (especially before Black Bison and Green Sai join) - despite being a rather slender robot, she occasionally jumps into battle as a fourth member. Once fell in love with a malfunctioning Jimmer, and later Yuusuke (who treated her coldly at the time until she saved him).
- Takuji Yano (矢野卓二 Yano Takuji): Academia student studying on the powering suits for space travel with Yuusuke, Jou, Megumi, and Mari. The older brother of Tetsuya and Takeshi. His prototype power suit featured a swallow. Yuusuke was his best friend. He was killed protecting his friends from Tsukigata's blasts. He promised younger brother Takeshi to build a dream car with him, his death resulting in the death of Takeshi's dream until he approached Yuusuke and Yuusuke agreed to help him build it (it eventually becoming the Live Cougar).
- Mari Aikawa (相川麻理 Aikawa Mari): Academia student studying on the powering suits for space travel with Yuusuke, Jou, Megumi, and Takuji. The older sister of Jun'ichi. She was also working on the plans for Bison Liner and Sai Fire before her death.
[edit] Arsenal
- Twin Brace (ツインブレス Tsuin Buresu): Liveman's tranforming device. The left wrist is the one with the animal icon. They transform by saying "Liveman!" (in the first 6 episodes, they say "(Color) (Animal)!").
- Liblaster (ライブラスター Raiburasutā): The standard sidearm of the team. It can be used as a gun or be separated into a sword and shield.
- Bimotion Buster (バイモーションバスター Baimōshon Basutā): The finishing cannon used throughout the series.
- Triple Bazooka (トリプルバズーカ Toripuru Bazūka): First used in episode 22, a weapon formed from the Falcon Saber, Dolphin Arrow, and Lion Bazooka.
- Spark Attack (スパークアタック Supāku Atakku): A special attack where the five members turn into balls of light and strike the enemy.
- MotoMachines (モトマシン Motomashin): Individual motorcycles for the original trio.
- MotoFalcon (モトファルコン Motofarukon): Red Falcon's MotoMachine.
- MotoLion (モトライオン Motoraion): Yellow Lion's MotoMachine.
- MotoDolphin (モトドルフィン Motodorufin): Blue Dolphin's MotoMachine.
- Live Cougar (ライブクーガー Raibu Kūgā): 4WD for the entire team. (Also used by Colon and later by Black Bison and Green Sai)
- Machine Buffalo (マシンバッファロー Mashin Baffarō): Last of the standard flying fortress, launches mecha components of Live Robo & Live Boxer.
[edit] Mecha
- Live Robo (ライブロボ Raibu Robo): Liveman's original trio robot (first giant robot consisting of mechanical animals) formed by the command "Combine! Live Dimension!" (合体ライブディメンション Gattai Raibu Dimenshon). Apparently, as seen in some episodes, Live Robo can be launched into battle already formed [This is most likely to allow for a mecha battle to happen when an episode's "on-foot" combat extends for a great period of time, and therefore little time is left on the show for the full 'gattai' sequence]. It is armed with the Super Beast Sword that is used for its finishing attacks Super Live Crash and Strong Crashdown, and also armed with the Live Shield, Double Cannons, and Live Robo Beam.
- Jet Falcon (ジェットファルコン Jetto Farukon): Red Falcon's jet. Forms the head and back of Live Robo. Stored in Machine Buffalo's upper compartment. Has legs for touchdown.
- Land Lion (ランドライオン Rando Raion): Yellow Lion's mecha-lion. Forms the torso and arms of Live Robo and the Live Shield. Stored in Machine Buffalo's lower compartment behind Aqua Dolphin.
- Aqua Dolphin (アクアドルフィン Akua Dorufin): Blue Dolphin's submarine. Forms the legs of Live Robo. Stored in Machine Buffalo's lower compartment in front of Land Lion. It has wheels for land travel.
- Live Boxer (ライブボクサー Raibu Bokusā): Liveman's second robot for Black and Green formed by the command "Combine! Boxer Dimension!" (合体ボクサーディメンション Gattai Bokusā Dimenshon). Called "Boxer" for boxing and kickboxing attacks. Consists of Bison Liner and Sai Fire. Its special attack is Piston Punch and its finishing attack is Miracle Big Blow.
- Bison Liner (バイソンライナー Baison Rainā): Trailer piloted by Black Bison; Red Falcon and Yellow Lion co-pilot at times. Forms the head, torso, arms, and left foot of Live Boxer, and the left shoulder, helmet, waist shield, and feet of Super Live Robo.
- Sai Fire (サイファイヤー Sai Faiyā): Missile truck piloted by Green Sai; Blue Dolphin co-pilots at times. Forms the legs and right foot of Live Boxer, and the forearms and right shoulder of Super Live Boxer.
- Super Live Robo (スーパーライブロボ Sūpā Raibu Robo): The combination of Live Robo and Live Boxer into a powerful robot. The 1st Sentai to have two robots combine to form a single, powerful robot. The two robots combine by the command "Combine! Super Live Dimension!" (合体スーパーライブディメンション Gattai Sūpā Raibu Dimenshon). Its finishing attack is Super Big Burst.
[edit] Armed Brain Army Volt
Believing most of humanity to be inferior, Armed Brain Army Volt (武装頭脳軍ボルト Busō Zunō Gun Boruto?) intends to create a new world ruled only by superior beings. Life has no value to them; only brains do. Great Professor Bias, the leader of Volt, believes in no one but himself and controls his trio of officers with the allure of evil science. He looks down upon the Earth and its inhabitants with contempt aboard the orbiting space station Brainbase. His officers use a triangular shuttle to journey between Earth and Brainbase. Volt's goal is to create a new population of only geniuses, wiping out those with "inferior minds".
- Great Professor Bias (大教授ビアス Daikyōju Biasu): Super genius scientist of evil beliefs, well versed in all knowledge. Worshipped as a god by his officers. Bias' intellect prevents him from brutally punishing his officers or yelling out at them upon their failure; he believes they should recognize and learn from their shame. Is actually very old, his true aim is to educate his officers until one of them possess a I.Q of 1,000. Once that occurs, he steals their brains, which begin to emit a "Giga Brain Wave" that keeps him eternally youthful and intelligent. Turns himself into a child with Kemp's brain, but Kemp's spirit is able to rebel and cause Bias to revert to his true old self. Dies weak and confused aboard the exploding Brain Base with Gash.
- Doctor Kemp (ドクター・ケンプ Dokutā Kenpu) (1-46): Formerly Kenji Tsukigata (月形剣史 Tsukigata Kenji), Yuusuke's former friend at Academia, turned rival once Kenji started to become egotistical and power hungry; is ashamed to have once been friends with a fool like Yuusuke. Top pupil of Bias who overestimates his own ability and is full of himself and vain, as reflected in when he assumes the form of Beauty Beast Kemp (美獣ケンプ Bijū Kenpu). By episode 36, Kemp becames Fear Beast Kemp (恐獣ケンプ Kyōjū Kenpu). He managed to obtained the IQ of 1,000, only to be robbed of his mind by Bias. As a result, Kemp's body becomes nothing more than the standard Brain Beast. Kemp's strong will returns enough to rob Bias of the powers he has obtained by using Kemp's brain in the finale.
- Doctor Mazenda (ドクター・マゼンダ Dokutā Mazenda): Formerly Rui Senda (仙田ルイ Senda Rui), Megumi's rival at Academia. Cold, with a shrill laugh as her trademark. Reconstructs herself as a cyborg to reflect her coldness, removing any remaining heart, affection and ability to love (these elements are used to make a Brain Beast doppleganger, who falls in love with Jou). Enjoyed the idea of becoming more and more cyborg in order to preserve her beauty and always be powerful. Becomes Machine Mazenda (マシン・マゼンダ Mashin Mazenda) (38-47) and RoboMazenda (ロボマゼンダ Robomazenda) (47 - to keep Bias from taking her brain). Gou causes her to begin to doubt Volt and Bias' true intentions. Dies after regaining some of her former humanity. Yuusuke was once in love with her during their college days.
- Doctor Obular (ドクター・オブラー Dokutā Oburā)(1-21) : Formerly Gou Omura (尾村豪 Omura Gō), Jou's one-time friend turned rival at Academia. A genius from childhood, who was always pushed to study and never allowed to play. Jou was always touched by the time he witnesses Gou attempt to save a drowning dog, despite the fact that Gou couldn't swim himself. Has an inferior complex that led him to become the monster Obular (his reasoning being that Kemp and Mazenda merely changed their bodies, while he also improved his mind). Eventually forced out of Volt once his powers begin to weaken and he ultimately ends up reverting to human and suffering amnesia, moving back home. Resurfaces later on, regaining his memory and letting the Liveman know about Bias' secret. Eventually takes up religion and makes it his mission to try and save his friends still with Volt before it's too late.
- Doctor Ashura (ドクター・アシュラ Dokutā Ashura) (12-46) and the Shurer Three (シュラー三人衆 Shurā Sanjinshu) (14-46): Formerly Arashi Busujima (毒島嵐 Busujima Arashi), tough-as-nails underworld figure and gang leader (he can take on a Brain Beast and win), who became a super genius after receiving an evil education from Bias. Is the most physically brutal of all of the Volt officers because of his background as a streetwise tough guy. Despises those who think they're geniuses, therefore superior(especially those from the Science Academia). Gained the ability to 'Cyber Body Split' and generate the Shurer Three. Is targeted by Bias when his Brain Beast at the moment, Hacker Zuno, hacked into Volt's mainframe and found suspicious articles regarding Bias' secret. Soon afterwards, Bias decides that Ashura is a hopeless candidate and strips him of his super-intelligence (reverting back to Arashi). After being befriended by the Liveman and Gou, he decides to strap himself with dynamite, and make a kamikaze run on a Brain Beast he -- or the Liveman -- were unable to defeat. Has a soft spot for women and has sided with Mazenda.
- Guardnoid Gash (ガードノイド・ガッシュ Gādonoido Gasshu): Bias's robot bodyguard, who wields the Gigaphantom monster-enlarging cannon. Dies alongside of Bias inside the Brain Base after losing his right forearm to Yuusuke.
- Gildos of Gild Star (ギルドス Girudosu): Robot secretly built by Bias to spur on Kemp et al, posing as (and believing himself to be) an alien intelligence. Dies after overexerting his body to repeatedly revive Guild Zuno, after realizing that he is a robot.
- Butchy of Chibuchi (ブッチー Butchī): Orange pig-like robot secretly built by Bias to spur on Kemp et al (and like Gildos, was made to have others believe he was an alien intelligence). Jocular, likes roller skating and music (he claims to be a karaoke expert). After witnessing Gildos' true robotic form, he doubts his existence, running amok until he's befriended by Megumi, who is by his side until his last moments when Bias decides to detonate Butchy by remote.
- Jimmers (ジンマー Jinmā): Green-skinned android soldiers with mohawk 'haircuts'. Can assume human form. ("Jinmā" is probably a take on Jin=man and Ma=Machine).
[edit] Brain Beasts

[edit] Trivia
- Liveman is the first Sentai series was the first initially to have three members and the two joining later. It is also the first Sentai to have a two-piece henshin device, which was later used in Turboranger, Dairanger, and Ohranger.
- Actor Daisuke Shima, who plays Yuusuke, also sings the opening theme song. Actress Megumi Mori, who plays Megumi Misaki, also sings the Blue Dolphin theme song, "Spark! To the Sea".
- Ninpu Sentai Hurricanger recycled the "two joining later" theme, although it is arguable that the Hurricanger and Goraiger teams are actually separate, cooperating units as opposed to Green Sai and Black Bison being formal Liveman additions.
- Has Black and Green Rangers as two-fifths of the main 5; usually Black and Green trade off in the main 5
- French actress/singer Dorothée had a cameo in this series as a scientist. Several Sentai series were a hit in France at the time (specifically Choudenshi Bioman and later Hikari Sentai Maskman, which aired in France as "Bioman 2: Maskman" (Liveman was aired as "Bioman 3: Liveman") and were shown on her hugely popular Club Dorothée children's show.
- As the tenth anniversary series, Toei wanted to celebrate by casting the then-hugely popular singing stars Daisuke Shima and Megumi Mori as the main Liveman members.
- This series was newcomer Kazuhiko Nishimura's big break. Nishimura has gone on to become a popular fixation in television dramas. His manager reportedly has made him remove listing Liveman on his résumé, but Nishimura says he's still proud of the show and his work on it.
- The Yuusuke character started the series as a comedic and hotheaded alternative to the regular sentai leader, more to reflect the image actor Daisuke Shima conveyed in his music of a rough juvenile delinquent. As the series progressed, and the more Shima wanted to distance himself from the image that was built by his music, the Yuusuke character matured into the more traditional courageous leader.
- The narration at the start of each episode states, "My friends! Why did you… sell your souls to the devil!?!" It is from the Livemen's point of view, referring to the betrayal made by their former friends who are now with Volt.
- The Triple Bazooka could possibly have been the inspiration for the design of the Howling Cannon in 1992's Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, as the two weapons share practically identical designs (even though the Howling Cannon also featured the weapons of all 5 Zyuranger, while the Triple Bazooka was composed of only the main three Liveman team members' weapons) .
