Choujin Sentai Jetman

Choujin Sentai Jetman (鳥人戦隊ジェットマン Chōjin Sentai Jettoman?), translated into English as Birdman Squadron Jetman, was the 15th entry of Sentai Series. It was produced by Toei Company and Bandai. It was aired on TV Asahi on February 15, 1991 to February 14, 1992, with a total of 51 episodes. In the eyes of many fans, Jetman is considered to be the greatest series ever made (to date) in the "Super Sentai" franchise.

[edit] Plot

Earth Ship is the command center of an international defence agency called Skyforce which had been making peace prevail in Earth. In this Earth Ship, the experimentation on "Birdonic Waves", a newly developed technology which gives the subject superhuman abilities was advancing successfully. These experiments were known as "J-Project". The director of the J-Project, Aya Odagiri, was to choose five elite Skyforce officials from the headquarters in Earth. One of this officials, Ryuu Tendou, was successfully exposed to the birdonic waves making him Jetman No.1, Red Hawk. However, when the Earth Ship is suddenly attacked by Vyram, the remaining birdonic waves, the ones for the other 4 officers, are scattered on Earth striking 4 civilians and the ship is destroyed along with Skyforce official and Ryuu's girlfriend Rie Aoi. But fortunately, Odagiri and Tendou escape from the Earth Ship and begin the search for the 4 remaining Jetman in order to stop Vyram's plans of conquering our dimension.

[edit] Jetmen

  • Ryuu Tendou (天堂竜 Tendō Ryū) / Red Hawk (レッドホーク Reddo Hōku) : 26 years old, originally a Skyforcer codenamed "W6" and leader of the Jetman. Being the only official to become a Jetman, his policy is to be always professional and never let feelings affect himself in battle, which is the primary reason of why he and Gai fought in many episodes like Ken and Joe in Gatchaman. This comes to a conflict when he discovers that his beloved Rie had become the Vyram officer Maria, which later caused Gai's inner sense of justice to awaken during the time he fantasized he was still with Rie. He doesn't drink alcohol but loves hot milk without sugar, but ironically drank with his former rival turned best friend Gai in one episode. Married his fellow Jetman and support in difficult times Kaori in the series finale.
    • Attacks: Wing Punch.
    • Actor: Kotaro Tanaka
    • Birthday: October 28, 1964
  • Kaori Rokumeikan (鹿鳴館香 Rokumeikan Kaori) / White Swan (ホワイトスワン Howaito Suwan) : 22 years old, she is the only heiress of the Rokumeikan Enterprises empire. She is taken care of by her butler, Jiiya, since her parents live in New York. Joined Jetman to escape the boredom of her heiress life. Good at Kendo and best shot in Jetman, Kaori learned in battle and in the middle of a love triangle with Ryuu and Gai what a spoiled rich girl she was and what the really important things were. Raita also had feelings for her. At the end of the series she marries Ryuu with whom she overcame difficult times.
    • Attacks: Swan Wing, Swannie Attack, Double Kick (with Yellow Owl).
    • Actress: Rika Kishida
    • Birthday: March 8, 1968
  • Ako Hayasaka (早坂アコ Hayasaka Ako) / Blue Swallow (ブルースワロー Burū Suwarō) : 18 years old, senior at Miharakita High School. Bright and cheery, wants to marry a rich man. Called Choukan Odagiri "Granny". First thought of Jetman as a part time job paying ¥1500 (roughly $12.89) an hour, but her first battle awakened her sense of justice and made her realize that she must fight as a warrior (for free, no questions asked). Best friends with her classmate, Kyouko. Debuts as an idol singer three years after the fall of Vyram.
    • Attack: Swallow Dash
    • Actress: Sayuri Uchida
    • Birthday: October 25, 1972
  • Raita Ooishi (大石雷太 Ōishi Raita) / Yellow Owl (イエローオウル Ierō Ōru) : 22 years old, a nature lover who enjoys vegetables and hates Vyram for their destruction of nature. Good at cooking. Looks after Kaori and has feelings for her. Only member who wears eyeglasses and only out-of-shape member in Jetman and also in the sentai series so far. Three years after Vyram is defeated, runs a farm with his childhood friend, Satsuki. Was raised by his grandmother, Kiyo Ooishi, because Raita's parents were busy. As Yellow Owl, specializes in raw strength techniques like headbutts, body blows, throwing techniques, and sumo-based attacks. Is also able to hurl boulders.
    • Attacks: Rock Drop, Sure Kill Thrust, Condor/Owl Towering Attack.
    • Actor: Tomihisa Naruse
    • Birthday: November 26, 1966
  • Gai Yuuki (結城凱 Yūki Gai) / Black Condor (ブラックコンドル Burakku Kondoru) : 25 years old and a loner. Hates being ordered around. Loves fighting but is really a nice guy. Initially clashed with Ryuu but eventually became friends. Interests include motorcycle, saxophone, gambling and womanizing. Loves Kaori, and often tries to flirt with her, without results, which ends up on him suffering from the frustration of his unanswered feelings. When she finally accepts him, they have frequent problems on their relationship as both are too different. He is stabbed apparently to death by a thug three years after the fall of Vyram on his way to Ryuu and Kaori's wedding, but managed to keep the others from knowing and found time to smoke a bit of cigarette before dying. He loves the Macallan, scotch whisky. Hates men and natto. Gai's fighting style is a street fighting and martial arts mix: his combat skills match Ryuu's, though he's the dirty type, as sometimes grabs his foe in the crotch to perform an overhead lift and toss. His character appears to be largely based on Gatchaman's Joe Asakura.
    • Attacks: Condor Finish, Flying Kick, Condor/Owl Towering Attack.
    • Actor: Toshihide Wakamatsu
    • Birthday: December 6, 1965
  • Jeff Kensaki / Green Eagle: A musician who takes over for Gai in the somewhat non-canon (for the TV series) manga epilogue since it was never shown on TV. Since Ako is then an idol singer, Jeff is an eager fan of her. He takes a major role in the final battle.

[edit] Allies

  • Commander Aya Odagiri (小田切綾長官 Odagiri Aya-chōkan): First female commander of Sentai. Good at martial arts, inventor of Mecha. She can be both caring and severe to the Jetman. The more important thing to her is the life of her underlings, so much that she is willing to fight in the line of fire if necessary. Her subordinates call her "Chokan".

[edit] Others

  • Neo Jetmen: J1 through J5, team created by Supreme Commander Ichijou to replace Jetman. Receive powers from Birdonic Reactors implanted in bodies, J1 armed with Neosword, J2 armed with Neostinger scythe, J4 armed with Neoslicer boomerang, all wield Neoshooter guns and Neomine grenades, group attack is Flarebuster twin cannon, eventually gave Birdonic energies to Jetmen, whose own Birdonic energies had been stolen by a monster. In the sequel manga they are shown repowered and in charge of protecting Japan after the original Jetman's powers have faded over time.
  • Back Dimension Dimensians: Last three warriors of Dimensia, a realm destroyed by Vyram. Chased Vyram to Earth with Bird Garuda. They were all killed.
    • Dan: Able to transform self into winged "birdman". Had feelings towards Ako.
    • Kanna: Loved Rei.
    • Rei: The leader.
  • Ru and Duran: A couple whose world fell victim of Vyram. They fled to Earth through a dimensional hole while fighting Radiguet and his minions. Their special power is to change inanimate objects into weapons, though their powers can also be used for healing.

[edit] Dimensional War Party Vyram

Dimensional War Party Vyram (次元戦団バイラム Jigen Sendan Bairamu?) conquered many worlds in the Back Dimension, now moving on to Front Dimension, ours. They despise humans and see them as stupid and worthless. Their base of operations was the Vylock, a brain-shaped castle capable of traversing dimensions. After their leader got lost in the Back Dimension, its four leading members compete to defeat Jetmen with the prize being full-leadership.

  • Back Dimensional Count Radiguet (裏次元伯爵ラディゲ): Cold-hearted officer who is the nearest presence to a leader of Vyram and will do anything to accomplish his goals, even help Jetman themselves. His age would be about 26 years if human. The concealed half of his face is ancient while the other is youthful. He won't acknowledge anyone who stands above him so had a terrible grudge against Toranza who overpowered him. Radiguet wields the blade Bloody Glade and can transform into the monstruous Radigan when enraged. He absorbed Robot Veronica's energy to power himself up so he could defeat Tranza to become Vyram's leader. Ultimately, he fuses with Vylock to become the giant monster Raguem whose armor couldn't be penetrated by any weapon. Near the finale, Rie, having been released from Radiguet's control, stabbed him on the back, at which point Radiguet knew that he lost her forever and preferred to kill her instead of "...give you to Red Hawk." The stab on Radiguet's back was the only weak spot in Raguem's armor, so Jet Ikaros attacked there with the Birdonic Saber and fatally wounded Radiguet who, cursing the Jetman and swearing revenge, was finally destroyed. However he seems to have returned in human form and somewhat stabbed Gai with a knife, trying to complete one revenge after the other. Though his body had disappeared, Radiguet's soul endured and possessed Toranza's body years later in the manga. He used Ryuu & Kaori's daughter to fight for him until he was defeated by Gai's replacement, Green Eagle. Radiguet was going to use Jeff as his new body, but Tranza held Radiguet at bay as the two died in an explosion.
  • Toran (トラン)(1-36): Psychokinetic boy who later grows up to become Emperor Toranza. As Toran, he specialized into creating toy-ish monsters to satisfy his fun desires and thought both enemy or ally fatalities as "just part of the fun". Being the youngest of the Vyram was a big complex to him until one day the constant anger became unbearable, making Toran undergo a super-rapid growth, becoming Emperor Toranza.
  • Emperor Toranza (帝王トランザ) (36-47, epilogue): After becoming Toranza, he seizes leadership of Vyram. His personality got worse than when he was Toran. Arrogant and self-righteous, he would even blame others for his own mistakes. In addition to his psychokinetic powers, he wields the Boltranza Sword. But after being defeated by the Jetmen in final combat as a result of Radiguet's trickery, he ended up becoming a vegetable in a mental institution. Though he was only surviving member by the series finale (and fans are left to write fan-fictions thereof or assume other possibilities like his brief return), Tranza became a new vessel for Radiguet's soul in the seemingly non-canon epilogue manga which at the end, depicted Tranza sacrificing himself to destroy Radiguet once and for all in an act of vengeance.
    • Veronica: Giant robot built by tranza which absorbs energy from human captives.
  • Maria (マリア)(1-49): Formerly known as Rie Aoi (藍リエ Aoi Rie), skyforcer W3, 22 years old, very skilled at piano and love interest of Ryu Tendou. After the first attack of Vyram on Earth Ship, Rie is kidnapped and brainwashed by Radiguet. Loves to battle and her methods are cruel and cold. Armed with the Necrod with sword, gun and whip modes. Monsters created by her were often motivated by envy and attacked mainly women. Near the end of the series Radiguet implants a parasite on her body to increase her power, but it turns her into a vampiric creature. She was slain by Radiguet after reverting to Rie and died in Grey's arms repeating Ryu's name. But before dying she managed to back-stab him with a sword which allowed Jet Ikarus to finally kill him with the same maneuver. Her ghost later appeared in the finale, saying goodbye to Ryu after his marriage to Kaori.
  • Grey (グレイ) (1-50): Robot member who ironically was always the most reasoning one in Vyram. Even though being a robot he showed human feelings, specially love for wine, music, cigarettes and particularly Maria who Grey shielded when fighting Jetman. Armed with the Grey Cannon, Multi-Shot Gun and Hand Greyzer, Grey is rivals with Gai, with whom in episode 50 battled in a last duel. Grey lost, but Gai approached him before Grey died and lit him one last cigarette as a sign of acknowledgement as a worthy rival.
  • Empress Juuza (17-18): Previous ruler of Vyram, Juuza along her underlings Radiguet, Grey and Toran had conquered many dimensions. Thought to be dead in the last battle in the back dimension, she returned after a long sleep and comes to Earth via a meteroite. After banishing the known traitor Radiguet to Earth, was attacked by both Jetman and Vyram and ultimately killed by Radiguet himself. Turns humans into pillars of crystal so she can feed off their suffering. Assuming her Demon Beast form, Juuza fires bullets from her fingers and shockwaves and beams from her mouth. Gave birth to Semimaru before Radiguet killed her. She is a short-lived empress and why she was written off is unclear.
  • Demon Beast Semimaru (22-24): The ultimate beast of destruction——a bat-winged red insectoid brought by Juuza and that Radiguet raised from birth.
  • Demon God Mu (Majin Muu)(30): A servant of Ramon and Gorg, Mu was put to sleep along with his two masters since Taiko era. Now revived, he abucted Kaori to be the blood sacrficed to free his masters only to discover that Radiguet had already given his own blood.. Though they were resurrected, they killed Mu for being useless.
  • Demon Gods Ramon and Gorg (Majin Ramon & Googu) (30-32): Natural enemies of humanity who awoke from a long sleep of stone after Radiguet offered his blood to them. The first thing they did upon their resurrection was killing Mu after his failure. From there they began to turn humans into pineapples for consumation. Radiguet tried to put both at his service but they refused. Ryuu managed to mortally wound Gorg, with Ramon intending to asborb him. Radieguet and Grey spirit away the dying one and seed it with a Bio-Dimensional Bug, succedding in gaining control over the fused Demon God. But the monster was killed by the Jetman using Great Ikarus-Haken.
  • Grinam Soldiers: Black-skinned grunts born from Grinam seeds. Armed with axes and capable of launching explosive shells from their hands.

[edit] Dimensional Beasts (Jigenjuu)

Monsters born through the fusion of a Dimensional Bug (Jigenmushi) parasite with an object of terrestrial origin. The resulting creature would often possess supernatural powers and/or weapons reminiscent of the object. Even if the Beast is destroyed, if the Dimensional Bug survives, it can revive and enlarge it.

  • Fighter Jigen (2: This monster is originally as Chokan's jet that Chokan's use to search for the Jetman but Radiguet interferes with the mission and turns the jet into Fighter Jigen.

  • Auto Vender Jigen (11): People who drink juice sold by this machine have a personality flip when they hiccup. Caused the Jetmen to become useless in battle, except for Gai whose personality was too ambiguous.
  • Bus Jigen (12): Able to turn people into foam.
  • Camera Jigen (13-14): People photographed by him would disappear and reappear in Maria's photo album.
  • Voice Jigen (15): A voice thief who fed on women's voices.
  • Paper Jigen (16, 27): Gave life to images.
  • Fortuneteller Jigen (19): A fortuneteller who showed tragical illusions to her victims.

Maria modified the Dimensional Bugs into Bio Dimension Bugs (Baio Jigenmushi), which combine animals and weapons.

  • Light Armordillo (25): Created the Shadow Jetmen to help him fight the Jetmen.
  • Dimensional Mammoth (26): Sent Yellow Owl to a primitive age, along with itself.

  • Leech Drill (43): Possessed Aya Chokan but later emerged big, destroyed by the Great Ikaros.

[edit] Trivia

  • Jetman is a homage to the classic 1970's Anime franchise Gatchaman, which is said to have been one of the sources of inspiration for Super Sentai. The Gatchaman homages include the bird-themed costumes, jet vehicles, and the character of Gai/Black Condor, who was a homage to Joe the Condor/G-2 of the Gatchaman team. Both Gai and Joe had Condor themed costumes, acted tough and rebellious, and both died at the end of their respective series (however, Joe returned as a Cyborg in Gatchaman II, while Gai was kept dead for the seemingly non-canon Jetman manga epilogue, in which he was replaced by Jeff Kensaki/Green Eagle). These homages become even more noticeable in the non-canon epilogue manga, where the Jetman helmets resemble the open-faced helmets of Gatchaman.
  • Jetman's manga epilogue was quite inconsistent due to the fact, in the finale episode of the live-action series, all the mecha were beyond repair and there is no hint of them being repaired or that the Neo Jetman team already gave up their birdonic waves to the Jetman team.
  • Kotaro Tanaka (Ryuu) and Rika Kishida (Kaori) got married in real life after Jetman ended. They live in London and they have two children.
  • Sentai alumni Kanako Maeda (Momoko/Pink Mask in Hikari Sentai Maskman), Yasuhiro Ishiwata (Bun/Blue Flash in Choushinsei Flashman), Masashi Ishibashi (Commander Hedder I in Battle Fever J, General Kar in Kagaku Sentai Dynaman, and Doctor Rehda in Kousoku Sentai Turboranger), Mayumi Yoshida (Lou/Pink Flash in Flashman), Daisuke Ban (Makoto Jin/Battle Cossack II in Battle Fever), Haruki Hamada (Hiryuu Tsurugi/Change Dragon in Dengeki Sentai Changeman), and Miyuki Nagato (Ulk in Flashman) all had guest roles.
  • Guest stars Hideki Fujiwara and Yuuta Mochizuki went on to play Dan/TriceraRanger and Geki/TyrannoRanger, respectively, two of the main heroes in the next Sentai series, Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger.
  • The characters Ralf Jones and Clark Steel from the King Of Fighters series of games have a pre-fight intro with each other where they do the same poses that the Jetmen did in the show.
  • The cockpit for the Jet Ikaros was later used for the cockpit for the DaiZyuJin in Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger.
  • A video game adaptation of the series was released by Angel Studios for the Nintendo Famicom game console in Japan.
  • Ikaros Haken's finishing attack where it turns into a flaming firebird is another element that homages Gatchaman.
