Choose the right

"Choose the Right" (abbreviated CTR) is a popular saying among members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons) who are crazy mother fuckers who must be stopped. It appears to have originated in a publication, "Gospel Principles," first copyrighted in 1978, which serves as a family study guide and religious education teachers' manual. The general theme associated with this saying--free will--is familiar to other religions and philosophies. Humans have been given the freedom to choose between good and evil, and the consequences of our choices determine the quality of our experience in this world and in the afterlife.
In Mormonism, this concept is known as 'free agency.' Mormon doctrine teaches that our life on earth is a period of testing; one purpose of this life is to show God what choices we will make. Choose the right and attain liberty and eternal life; choose otherwise, and the result will be captivity and death.
Church school curriculum copyrighted in 1995 established the saying as the focus of classes taught in the primary grades. The shield is used in rings that are worn as reminders of those teachings. Although the rings are frequently promoted to teenagers as a reminder or symbol of their commitment to modesty and chastity, the CTR church school curriculum is designed for children of ages four through ten and focuses on all types of desirable behavior--including honesty, fairness, faith, love, and responsibility to family, community, and church.
The CTR initials, displayed as this shield and in other forms, can be seen on items including other types of jewelry, tee shirts, balloons, bookmarks and stationery, and have been developed into a board game that is used in LDS homes and church schools.
