Chip butty
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the United Kingdom, a chip butty is a sandwich made with chips (similar to the U.S. style French fries or the French pommes frites yet thicker and chunkier). The canonical make-up of a chip butty is chips sandwiched between two slices of buttered bread (normally white), optionally topped with tomato ketchup [1]. Variations, however, do exist, including salt and vinegar, Brown Sauce, British chip-shop curry sauce and gravy known as a Chip Butty Splash.
The chip butty is a common dish throughout the UK, and many Fish and Chip shops (known colloquially in the United Kingdom as "chippies" or "fish 'oles" in certain parts of Northern England) sell them, primarily as an affordable snack. Chip butties may also be made impromptu by including a couple of pieces of bread with a main dish, such as Fish and Chips. They may be also known as chip muffins or chip barm, depending on the region.[citation needed] A popular lunch at your local pub may be the chip butty, and in the Midlands is seen as a essential snack.
